[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Here's the classic Gates of the Valley view in Yosemite National Park in California's Sierra Nevada Mountains.

For good reason this view has been an inspiration to many generations of photographers and painters alike. In fact, I have an oil painting of this view (by an unknown artist bought at a yard sale) but did not have it in my portfolio until a New Year's trip at the end of 2006. The view is framed by El Capitan on the left, Cathedral Rocks on the right, and the Merced River in the foreground.

Winter is an interesting time to visit Yosemite but don't necessarily expect solitude. A major holiday like New Year's Eve can bring tremendous crowds to the park. And if you plan to stay over for New Year's, you'd better plan in advance or you'll be staying in a heated tent like my wife and I did. For someone like me who likes to sleep outside whenever I can in the wilderness, this was somewhat luxurious. Our visit coincided with a major cold spell in California that actually damaged many citrus crops around the state. And here at Yosemite Valley the temperatures were well below freezing. But the heated tent was very, very warm. A very good experience all in all.

About the photo: One thing that never ceases to amaze me about photography is the power of cropping. There were numerous people here with me enjoying and shooting this view, but with a little selective framing you create the illusion of having the park to yourself.

Regards,
Doug

Hello Doug,

The famous smooth walls of Yosemite are very photogenic. I like the light and the alpenglow hitting the massive wall. Nice contrast and excellent point of view to capture the river. This place look amazing. Thanks Doug :-)

Hello Doug,
Yes, it is a classic view, and one of my favorite Galen Rowell pictures was probably shot from around the same spot. But that does not detract from the quality of your photo. An inspirational one, Doug. So you have a custom-made dual purpose 400D that takes film too :)? Regards,
Hakan

Hello Doug

It`s always a pleasure to watch photos from Yosemite National Park. This place is unbelievable beautiful.Indeed a classic.Didn`t know why the sky is so pinky, after seeing that you used a warm filter.Nice shot.TFS

Lucian

Hi Douglas,
Yes an American classic, but presented in a superb way. The light shining on the rock in the background, the color, the use of light allover, and the sharpness and details are simply superb. The sky with the punishing grey clouds have added a lot to this wonderful image.
Best regards. Salvator.

Hi Douglas

Truely a classic. What a beautiful view of the valley. Amazing light and colors. Very sharp with a nice low pov. Well done.

Interesting note for a lovely picture of a place I had the chance to visit. Furthermore I had also the chance sleeping in a tent!
Anyhow I like these winter tones in the early morning...in particular the POV from the rocks below!
ciao
Silvio

We all have our classics - for us it is the Matterhorn maybe. But when you stand there you can't help it and no matter how many tourists are in your way, you are gone and away. You have really excellent color tones on this one, and as I can see it was winter and this brought out this very special pinkish light. You have a heated tent? I mean hello, a little suffering would not hurt :) Just kidding ... This summer, in Colorado, I was wearing cloves for drinking my morning coffee (our tent was frozen) ... This is a wonderful photo, Doug, very special winter mood. Have a good day, Barbara.

Beautiful view, fantastic light. i like the composition with weeds and rocks in the foreground. well done.

Hello Doug,
The place is very beautiful indeed but in my opinion the excellent handle of light gives here the big difference. And the colors painted so well from this amazing light!

This is a really spectacular shot - even iconic! The composition is wonderful, with the river in the foreground and the huge cliffs in the background. I also like that sun on the cliff face, while other areas are in shadow. Great scan too. Superb work!

Doug,
I was wondering what made this shot so much better than any previous post of your galery. Finally reading through your note I found the answer in the last sentence. It was the Nikon device ... ;-)
You certainly got an interesting light to take the full advantage of this place. I don't have to say anything about the composition after being there some myriad of times and taking shots of this place incountable times myself.
Regards, Peter

Aren't you lucky to have a warm tent at night and this lovely snowy scene in day? It's just a winner in my book. Never saw this view with snow. The composisiton is superb with the upper rock cradle offset by the openness of the foreground water / frosted mounds. Fine attention to detail and lighting too. Conggratulations!

Hi Doug,
You really got the light here!! The glowing El Cap contrasts beautifully against the stormy dark sky; the cold blue-grey river and the powdering of snow.

I started to comment that people should cut you some slack considering that your wife was pregnant; and I counted the months - hmmm. Even though I was born in Kansas, I brag that I was conceived in California. I wonder if your son will brag that he was concieved in a tent?

Hi Doug
You captured a glorious lighting that enhances the majesty of king, rarely seen with its white mantle!
Congratulations for the Nikon 8000ED; I envey your luck of possessing such an elaborate scanner that swipes at 4000dpi optical any size of film up to 6x9.
You're very very lucky! Enjoy it! I own the Coolscan III, 35mm only.
Best regards.
Robert

Hi Doug, i like the colors here...warm tones...
a good landscape image, classic but well taken and composed..
ciao!

Hi Doug.
What a beautiful scene. The colors all around are nice, and I really like the setting of your picture. I really like the small patch of sunlight coming in from the top corner.

Wow, this is a great shot. The timing is so nice, with the sun shining on the top half of the mountain. You've also balanced the exposure really well in the low light. Thanks for sharing.

Salut Douglas

Hi Douglas,
It's not easy to find any meaningful words to write about photos so gorgeous as this one.
The impressive beauty of the place surely helps, but it is not enough to explain the great impact of it. There is the framing, there is the amazing light and colors... Those subtly highlighted mounds of grass on the FG give a lot of balance to the compo and I am glad you didn't eliminate the purple tones.
Regards, José.

I couldn't let this one pass. The light you had was gorgeous, especially on the top of El Capitan, but there is a lovely pink glow all over the image. The light dusting of snow adds a touch of wonder. The framing is good with the little line of rocks in the foreground. I also like the smoothness of the water thanks to a slow shutter speed I expect. Good work
Kath

beautiful colors and view Doug, I stop here many times but never have the patient to wait for the light.

HI Doug,

Wonderful tone ... great low foreground .. the purple clouds add a really interesting mood ... do you remember the speed? .. the water is very nice. Well done .. I think well worth a night in a tent .. even in January .. I am not home .. and using a foreign monitor .. but the trees look a bit dark to me ... still bringing them up in some manner might destroy this wonderful mood and neuter the image .. very nice and classic shot.

take care,

John
