"San Diego County spokeswoman Lesley Kirk says the entire town of Julian is threatened by the Witch Fire and now is under mandatory evacuation orders. Water and power in the town are down. The nearest shelter is at Borrego High School on Diegueno Road in Borrego Springs." [32 miles/51 km to northeast.]

I'm shocked by the huge dimension of the wildfires in Southern California [click for my previous post]. According to that news, this pretty home and nice woods in Julian may be burned by now (I wish it is not). I hope at least there is nobody injured.
In the center (inland) of San Diego County, Julian is a quaint mountain town, located in a mixed pine-oak woodland at 4,235 ft (1.219 m) above sea level [see map; click at left]. It is famous for its apples and related products, such as pies and cider (I tasted both and enjoyed them). The town had a short-lived gold rush in 1869.
Julian suffered already the destruction of homes during the 2003 Cedar Fire (the firefighter Steven Rucker, 38, died in Julian then).

Ola Franciso,
Very timely post, you sure got around when you were in San Diego. Our friends, the Alaskan salmon fishman & woman, lost their Julien home in 2003. I really hope it doensn't happen again. They winter in SD & fish summers. LeAnne had been fishing summers with her school teacher parents since she was a child. She had her own boat when she met Tim. Since he had his own boat too, they still fish separately. I posted their Alaska house in Wrangell when I first started.

Greetings Francisco, I share your sentiments exactly. About a week before the fires, my wife and I with our new son went on our first field trip to Julian to pick some apples. We didn't realize it ahead of time but the season had peaked a couple weeks before. So the apple picking was not great but still fun to get some experience traveling with our son. We hoped that perhaps next year we could back at the right time and do better but this just shows how you never know what the future might bring. A reminder to make the most of things and live in the moment I guess. Thanks for sharing

Oi Francisco!
Quanto tempo!

Cumprimentos.
Marie Louise.
