A reconstruction of a pithouse (without the earthen roof) in the ancient Indian village in the heart of Utah's canyon country wich was one of the largest Anasazi communities west of the Colorado River.
The site is believed to have been occupied from A.D. 1050 to 1200.
The village remains largely unexcavated.
Pithouses were built by excavating a well-defined hole into the ground as deep as four to five feet, and creating walls and roof using poles and adobe technology. Of course, the roof was vegetal.
The sunken floor of the dwelling is below the frost line and helps moderate both winter and summer temperatures, with the mass of the ground serving as an insulator. The earliest pithouses were round, and varied in size between nine and twenty-five feet in diameter.
A fireplace was set in the center and a small ventilator shaft was dug to bring in fresh air and evacuate smoke.

Gee you learn something new everyday. I've never heard of this, very interesting and a really good clear picture. I really enjoy this sort of stuff. TFS

Hi Robert,
this is a very interesting shot annex very interesting note.
Lovely soft colors and the usual outstanding clarity, pretty much a trademark of yours. Very subtle frame too, I like it a lot.
Good job, I just learnt something new.
Thanks for sharing, buddy.
Have a great evening,
Fulvio.

Hello Robert! Very good composition that allows us to peer into history. The POV is perfect and the converging timbers make a nice pattern. Well done! Incidentally this house would be worth about 500K in California's hyper-inflated real estate market :)

Hi Robert,
Great capture of this native American structure which would provide warmth in the winter and shade in the summer. Excellent details and sharpness to this educational image.
Regards, Tom

Never heard before - very interesting- Brilliant POV to make this place very interesting, A lovely place really.
Best wishes,
Achim

Hello Robert,
Good point of view resulting in an educational capture!
Fine details in the construction, hopefully the fireplace worked the way it should so they didn't get chocked...
And I agree about the temperature control, no need for aircon there!
Not to forget about the environment friendly architecture...
Greetings,
Pablo -

Bonjour Robert
You show us some interesting pieces of history through your photographs, a fine documentation of Indian life. The converging timbers create a good graphism...a well written note to understand better. Very good all round effort.
Best Regards
Angshu

Hello Robert. Something interesting and new to me. Well written note complemented by this beautiful detail of the image. I'm sure there isn't much rain in Utah. If we have something like this here, it'll turn out to be a watering hole. Thanks for sharing and best regards. Jusni
