If you've ever seen the colorful effects of mineral waters, the Grand Prismatic Spring at Yellowstone has to be one of the best examples. Not only do the minerals taint the ground on which it spills, but also the air we breath and the steam that rises from it. The coloration of the steam is not a trick of PS, but how the photo actually turned out.

Great colours, It looks like molten lava!
Was that area part of the fire in 1986?

Five distinct lines of colors converging to disappear in the steam...Wow! It's like a painting coming right from imagination. You've got everything in this wonderful shot.

Wow, when I first saw this I couldn't imagine how it happened, thanks for the explanation. The orange color of the water and the blue sky above makes for a vivid capture. Composition is excellent.

Definitely a very good composition. Besides the beautifull colours I really like the fact that 'the river', the hill in the background and the smoke are going all the same direction.

Great picture. A lot of dead-looking timber in the background --- I guess that was fire damage?
Steft (5975) 2005-10-09 13:33
Wow, this is very special. You don't see this very often. Beautiful colours here, I especially like the yellow tones. It is a bit like a painting.
The clouds give the photo a mystic atmosphere.

Fantastic picture - hard to belive this is the effect of the minerals in the water. Really looks like lava.
danielswalsh (13599) 2006-02-13 20:16
Interesting shot Ned;
It really does look hot with the lava-like color of the waters in conjunction with the steam in the background
It's a good composition, the diagional movement of the stream leads the eye into the shot. It could be a little sharper for my liking, but as I see the shot seems to have been scanned in...
The dead trees in the background are a result from the air here- or was it from a forest fire?
erdna (5711) 2006-02-14 1:23
Incredible colors and very good composition. i can almost smell the stench of that smoke.
Flavia (10352) 2007-03-12 23:45
