Bluff City was established in 1880 by a group of Mormon pionners called to colonize the San Juan River area of southeastern Utah.
After the settlers established thier town, they were beset by the challenges of marginal souls, floods, dam breaks, extreme heat and Indian trouble.
In 1884 some left after a flood of nine feet higher than normal. Those who stayed developped a prosperous local livestock industry.
Today, this region of San Juan County attracts tourists
in unprecedented numbers despite the town has no sewer system, people living there have no jobs and grade school enrollment declines yearly.
