Photographer’s Note
Part 8 of a 13 part series on slacklining on library lawn at Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, Oklahoma.
As a person grows more and more comfortable on the slackline, merely walking on the line gives way to more and more difficult feats. Here a man named David completes a turn on the line. He had been walking toward me, but while keeping his balance, he pivoted his feet in one smooth motion to the end result that he faced the other direction. This is seemed to be the first move that slackliners master after they have become fairly comfortable walking.
This picture was largely inspired by designsoul. Her gift for using shadows in very graphic and powerful ways in urban settings challenged me as i recorded the slacklining.
By the time i had taken this picture, i had spent several hours over two days recording slacklining. i was starting to run out of ideas. Possibly my favorite picture of the whole series had been taken on the first day (it will be Part 12), and i was starting to get bored with the points of view that seemed obvious. At the same time, though, i felt like my series was lacking a specific perspective. After taking tired compositions in frustration, it occurred to me that perhaps i was missing a high vantage point. i had a friend hold my camera while i climbed to a notch about seven or eight feet up in the tree and shot a few pictures of the action from up there.
One workshop is a picture taken probably within a second and a half of this one... David didn't quite have his balance as well as he would have liked.
The second workshop is a picture of me clambering from my perch, taken by a man named Patrick whom i met while watching the slacklining.

What are you doing, posting these out of order? You just posted this one yet Part 9 was uploaded in April!!!
A nice catch here, from the tree this time, not laying on the ground. Good B&W tones and excellent composition. The shadows look good, not as good as some of Sasa's shots, but good enough to make some nice lines and silhouette's (and by the way, there's not many shots that I've seen that use shadows as well as hers, so don't take it too bad). A nice looking shot.
Nice work.

NIce catch Sam, without the shadow on the left it would maybe look a little empty, so that's good...

Hi Sam. As noted the POV is very good, and the shadows adss very much to the scene, especially in the B & W. The composition is tight, which is good, and you feel the challenge of the play. It is actually a very good photo, I look foreward to the rest, and of course most the no. 12. Take care, Jens :-)

Hello Sam
The choice of black and white helps to accentuate a sort of graphic minimalism which works well on this photo. THe horizontal shadows provide a nice graphical element.

hey sam,
the pov this time makes this photo look "universal"...its no longer about that excersise, its more about the graphism and geometry than the "event" itself...
best, j.

God, at first I thought he was missing a leg, I like the blurred motion of the left hand and the shadow of the rope which keeps the left half of the frame in balance.

Hi Sam,
I like this one as well. A very challenging point of view for sure! I'm not much of a tree-climber, so my respect for this one ;-). It could have done with a slight lowering in exposure perhaps. The shoulder part is a bit distracting with the whitish reflections. But still a wonderful composition with all those long shades. (Crop the foot out in the top corner... ;-) ). Nice work!
Greetings, Dennis
