Photographer’s Note
This young man was taking part in Independence Day festivities on July 4 at Washington Crossing. He is a re-enactor portraying a drummer boy of the late 1700's. He is clothed in Continental Army attire.
Armies would regularly recruit young boys for service as drummers, well into the nineteenth century. These young drummer boys would use their skills to perform an important role in the battlefield communications system by playing various drum rolls to signal different commands. Recruiting boys for this task freed men for combat duty and as the boys got older they could be enlisted into the ranks.
Drummer boys were usually treated as mascots by the troops and often entrusted into the care of the regimental chaplain. Since they had few military duties to perform, the life of a drummer boy appeared rather glamorous and this caused many a young boy to run away from home to enlist in the army. Officially there were age restrictions for this job but these were often ignored and boys as young as ten years old were occasionally recruited.

The look of concentration and purpose is very good. I alos like the posture. However I wish there was a bit more distance between the boy and the building.

Another nice entry in this historical mini-series of yours, Linda. I like how the boy really seems absorbed in his task, and the setting is a fine one in front of the old stone building, and in good colors. Needless to say, another excellent note to go with it. Very good.

I like it - the pose and facial expression are so stiff and serious. He's really into what he's doing. I think you show us good detail in the wall behind as well, but I don't think the pipe "fits" - do you know?
I also like this series of photos and notes you are sharing with us. Looking forward to more.

Perhaps more than anything else, I love the expression on the boy's face! Interesting note, too. This is a nice historical portrait with a lot of flair to it.

Le cadrage ici a été bien pensé car il met cet enfant bien de l'avant, le regard du sujet donne a l'image la sensation d'un mouvement figé c'est du plus bel effet.
Bravo Linda

I like :
1.his height & little figure in comparison with this drum.
2.the stone-wall at his back
3.the way he looks & is places in your picture.
