A different type of view of Mt. Rainier along with the Seattle cityscape taken at sunset from Kerry Park just north of the Seattle city center. This view of Mt. Rainier really shows the immense size of the montain and how it just sticks up out of the surrounding mountains. It is a national park of one mountain, a huge dormant stratovolcano. It is predicted to erupt one day. I predict that day will also see an all time record for visitors, mostly photographers, to this park (Kerry park that is, not Mt. Rainier). From this viewpoint, Mt. Rainier is approximately 85 miles away. For a comparison of distance / scale, the Space Needle in the foreground is 605 ft. high, Mt. Rainier in the background is 14,410 ft. high.

As for the foreground, Seattle, I think wikipedia can explain it better than I:

"Seattle is the largest city in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States. It is located in the U.S. state of Washington between Puget Sound and Lake Washington, about 96 miles (155 km) south of the United States–Canadian border in King County, of which it is the county seat.

Seattle was first settled November 14, 1851, by Arthur A. Denny and his crew, which would subsequently become known as the Denny party. Its first name was New York, then Duwamps, then finally it was renamed Seattle after Chief Noah Sealth who was chief of the two tribes living in the area ("Seattle" is an anglicized rendition of his last name). As of 2006, the city had an estimated population of 582,454 and an estimated metropolitan area population of approximately 3.3 million. Seattle is the hub for the Greater Puget Sound region. Its official nickname is the Emerald City, the result of a contest by a civic-minded association in the early 1980s to designate a pleasant nickname for the city; the name alludes to the lush evergreen trees in the surrounding area. It is also referred to informally as the Gateway to Alaska, Queen City, and Jet City, due to the local influence of Boeing. (Seattle-area band Queensrÿche also wrote a song called "Jet City Woman".) Seattle residents are known as Seattleites.

Seattle is often regarded as the birthplace of grunge music, and has a reputation for heavy coffee consumption; coffee companies founded in Seattle include Starbucks, Seattle's Best Coffee, and Tully's. There are also many successful independent artisanal espresso roasters and cafes. Seattle was the site of the 1999 meeting of the World Trade Organization, and the attendant demonstrations by anti-globalization activists. Researchers at Central Connecticut State University ranked Seattle the most literate city in America in 2005. Moreover, a United States Census Bureau survey showed that Seattle has the highest percentage of college graduates of any major U.S. city.A survey done by Sperling's Bestplaces listed Seattle as the number 1 video game city in the US. Based on per capita income, Seattle ranks 36th of 522 studied areas in the state of Washington.

I will also put the original photo I was going to post in the workshop. I decided on this one for the more "focused" view of the skyline and Mt. Rainier.

Note: after looking at it uploaded to the site, I think it looks a little tilted. I have overlayed a grid on it in photoshop though and it comes out totally straight - I think it is just the distortion of my lens (or my eyes). Hmmm, interesting...and yes, this photo could benefit greatly with a noise reduction program. It's almost time to update my software.

Here is another photo of Seattle taken from the same view point a little time later on the same night and also a closer view of Mt. Rainier.

Wow, great shot! The soft morning (or is it evening?) light gives a very attractive glow to the buildings and the mountain, while also coloring the sky an amazing shade (mauve?). I like the long horizontal frame too, which avoids a lot of empty space and fills the frame nicely. Well done!

Could be a very nice postcard ! great colors and composition is well done

Ciao John ,

Hi John,

Purple Seattle! Great cityscape very well composed. Excellent sharpness.

Greetings from Brasil
Leonor

That's a beautiful perspective. Nice colors and composition. I think the sky colors would be even more vivid just a few minutes before this shot. I have been to Kerry Park in evenings only, though I plan to go there at dawn sometime soon. I think the view should be even more beautiful at dawn.
Thanks for sharing this lovely pic.

Hi John,
Fanstatic sky in purple color! Mysterious mountain as background. Distinct image to show variety high buildings in the modern city, good cropping work, perfect photo.

Very wonderful soft colour on the sky with beauty city view of Seattle, i like the Mt Rainier on the distant. It make a perfect combination between man-made structure and the nature. Very nice, John. tfs

greetings
daniel

A great POV. It's a bit hazy and there is a mark above the tower. But this is still a great shot! TFS

I like the sky in this one very much John. This really is a shot of pastels. Mt. Rainier shows through without a lot of contrast but still in a very distinct way. This and the sky provide a very excellent backdrop to your space needle and the rest of the city.

Thanks, John

Hello,
This is very good cityscape photo. The diagonal "slope" of the buildings is countered by the presence of the mountain. This gives this photo a nice balance. The purple sky looks very good as well.

Erdem

Hi John,
Very good panoramic photo. Fantastic POV showing the contrast between nature (mountain) and the concrete jungle. Well captured and composed. Well done! tfs
Cheers,
Renier

John,
Another fantastic postcard from Seattle... excellent compo, including the icons of the city. What can I say about light? ... run out of adjectives.

I was there once... long before TE was born. Wish to visit again.
cheers
Jorge

Hi John.

I've heard here many times the word "how close"... sometimes, we tend to be and sometimes, we will be so..
Here, that's it... a close depiction of details, and yet the place stands well in it's real proportions. Fantastic image balancing. Well done, dear friend.

Hi John
Somehow, I like better the WS version because, IMHO, the inclusion of the trees is giving more distance to the beautiful Mt Rainier and a good balance to the photo. The huge roof behind the trees with the reflecting red lights on it, adds perspective...
Cheers
Marilyn

hI JOHN!!

Fantastic Photo!!

cheers

Hey John,

Dude just looking at this image makes life so balanced and relaxed...the beauty of the city and nature all in one. The softeness of the colour tones makes a this view a relaxing theraphy, the view is spectacular not too overwhelming, strong appeal (photo quality) yet subtle to the eye (mind)...just what I need ;)

As for the tilt: At first I kinda felt the tilt but I don't think it's that bad. But as you stare from the middle to the right you''ll see the gradual tilting in the last four buildings.

All the best!

Jom

Dear John,
I made approximately the same shot during my stay in Seattle.
Colors are pretty well rendered.
Panoramic format works very well.
Thanks for sharing,
