[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
California Brown Pelican

Unique among the world's seven species of pelicans, the Brown Pelican is found along the ocean shores and not on inland lakes. This bird is distinguished from the American White Pelican by its brown body and its habit of diving for fish from the air, as opposed to co-operative fishing from the surface. It eats mainly herring-like fish. Groups of Brown Pelicans often travel in single file, flying low over the water's surface.

On a personal note:

I am dedicating this shot to my grandfather who passed away on April 25, 2007.

May his soaring spirit always be remembered.

This photo was taken at 11:34 PST. My camera is set to BST, hence the 19:43.

stranges and beautiful silhouettes flying away ..

Very beautiful shot! I have some photos of the Brown Pelicans taken on the Oregon Coast. They are amazing birds! Nice composition! My condolences on your lost...it is nice that you dedicated such a nice photo to your grandfather.

Take care,
Bettina Marie =0)

Nice formation by these large, impressive creatures.
The Lens flare works, too!

Hi Leilani,
Normally, photos taken against such a harsh sun do not look very well - but you proofed that a photo like this is possible! Excellent controlling of the light.
I like the composition with the dark silhouettes of the birds. Maybe I would have cropped a little bit closer to the sun and birds though. But I like it still a lot.
Thanks for sharing,
Stef

Hi Leilani, interesting shot, you seem to be a lover of pelicano, i do too, i have too a picture of one of them in mexico, so "easy" when flying :) You were right to choose at least F11 cause in that situation against sun you could have had a worse result ;)
Perhaps a tigher crop would have led to a better compo, more aggressive, perhaps :)
Good anyway

What a nice picture. You have been very good to catch them, while flying against the sun.
It's a pity that some lens reflection are made by the sun, but there is nothing to do with it, unless you delete them with Photoshop.
