Gulf Shrimper just off the beach of Galveston Island

The Gulf shrimping season inside 5 nautical miles off Galveston Island opens on February 16 and runs until May 15. Closed to shrimping until July 16, the Gulf will then remain open until November 30. Shrimping hours are from 30 minutes before sunrise to 30 minutes after sunset. No shrimping is allowed at night.

The things hanging down from the outriggers(spreaders) are called birds(the right one is submerged). Their purpose is to dig into the water and stop the back and forth rocking of the boat. A boat can pull up to 3 nets at a time. The birds are feeding on sealife stirred up by the nets dragging on the bottom and are waiting for the nets to be brought in at which time they will feed on the small fish culled from the catch and thrown overboard.
