Photographer’s Note
The Bolivar Lighthouse located near the tip of the Bolivar Peninsula was erected in 1872 and towers 117 feet above sea level. On May 29, 1933 it was officially retired when it was replaced by the South Jetty Light. For 61 years the 52,000 candle-power beacon in the Bolivar Lighthouse guided ships safely from the Gulf of Mexico into the then undredged Galveston Ship Channel and the Port of Galveston. Today she is privately owned and slowly rusting away.
