Photographer’s Note
Ohia Lehua blossom shot on a new lava flow, the tree is the first to appear on one, thus it has sacred meaning to Hawaiians. It is a promise of new life on the aina, the land. The lovely red flowers contain honey and are the flower of the island of Hawaii. It is said that if a lehua is picked on the way to the mountain it will rain. Ohia trees can grow to 100 feet high.
