Photographer’s Note

These are the Painted Hills, part of the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument in Oregon. The incredible colour is natural, as are the shapes. This was formed as a result of volcanic eruptions of ash, which was deposited hundreds of meters thick. Over time the ash compressed, and minerals leached from one layer to the next. Then the deposits were exposed to the elements and eroded into these smooth, dune like hills. I have some more zoomed in shots which look very abstract, and I will post later, but for my first shot from the area I wanted to show something that was at least recognizable as hills.
