[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Cloud Gate, Chicago, September 2006

This is the celebrated installation by British sculputre, Anish Kapoor in Chicago's Millennium Park. This was opened to the public in 2004 and it has been a popular attraction ever since. During its first public opening, the seams of the steel plates that comprise the sculpture were still visible. They closed it for a little while, built a canopy over it in the winter of 2004-2005 so they can polish the seams. They basically had to invent a new technology to polish and clean the structure, popularly known as "The Bean." Inspired by liquid mercury, the sculpture is among the largest in the world, measuring 66-feet long by 33-feet high and weighing 110 tons.

It is a very interactive sculpture with people able to touch it, look at their reflection, go under it, photograph it ... the reaction people have to it is just incredible. I remember, even Anish Kapoor, during its public dedication last year, I remember having said that he himself was astonished at the emotions people have in reaction to the sculpture.

Please see my Mercury Rising series for a funky look at Cloud Gate over the years.

Hi Ken, A brilliantly composed photo, I love this reflection & the distorted view it give, the colours are excellent & wonderful light, great shot, kind regards Wilson.

Very nice work. Good POV and colors for this intersting picture. The distorted reflection is really amazing.

Hi Ken,
This is a fantastic photo with the excellent reflections in all directions. A very good choice to include the "front" of the sculpture which gives a different kind of distorted reflection.
This is also a photo begging for a workshop playing with the background. I'll see if I have some time to do so.
Well done!

Hi Ken. A very good picture. It is really lovely. The reflexion of the houses and the sky on the monument coincides with the orizon line making composition special. In other way, your comments about the monument are very goods. Congratulations for this nice picture.

Hello Ken,

Fabulous shot of the "bean." I had never heard of it, but it is a compelling piece of art. Your note is succint but informative. The next time I am in Chicago, I intend to seek it out.

Warm regards from Virginia,

Bulent

The wonderful blue sky makes this a brilliant shot of "The Bean, Ken.
I also like how you have captured the different people in the shot - especially the person holding their arms out wide.
Well done.
