The Wrangell Narrows are the along the inland passage between Wrangell Island and Petersberg on Mitkoff Island. We were dining on the Columbia, one of the few boats of the Alaska State Ferry system that has a formal dining room. Suddenly I noticed that the channel seemed very narrow. I raced outside with my camera to capture this shot of the place where the channel narrows to 300’/91m. Although the ferry is 100’/30m wide, I thought we would surely strike one of the buoys. Actually not long after we passed through, a smaller ferry, the Kennicott, did go aground. If you have good eyes, you can pick out this Bed & Breakfast on Kupreanoff Island (Pop 50) The right side of the channel is Mitkoff Island where Petersberg is located.

If you're planning a trip to Southeast Alaska, consider the Alaska State Ferry. I’ll post a map of the ferry system in the WS. You can plan ahead and get a stateroom for longer sections, such as Bellingham, WA to Ketchikan or Port Hardy, BC to Prince Rupert, BC. You can also go at the last minute and pitch your tent on the deck or you can sleep in a tilt back chair or on the floor in the lounge. On two trips up the Marine highway, I've tried most of these ways, (except the tent).

Even without a car, I think the ferry is vastly preferable to a cruise ship because you can get off and visit an area until the next ferry comes; generally a couple of days. Of course with some of those cruise ship deals, a cruise ship might be cheaper but then you're stuck exploring with literally thousands of other tourists.

Pat I see Alaska as the last frontier in the USA. A place abundant in wildlife and natural beauty treathened by oil exploration. Your picture is lovely. The soft colours of the cloudy sky and the enclosed waterways make for a nice composition. Nice work Pat.

Beautiful composition, Patricia.
Even from the thumbnail the colours are amazing.
After reading your note, you did well to capture this shot.

Bonjour Patricia
Très belle composition - un vrai tableau avec de magnifiques coouleurs. Ce paysage a un air de sérénité.
Bravo - merci pour le partage et bonne journée.

Hi Pat. Ironic you should post an Alaskan photo as Sue and I are doing just that in May. This will be our first trip abroad and is a trip Sue has wanted to do since childhood. I can’t remember the details but we do a cruise and overland combined tour. If this is what we are in for I can’t wait! Great photo and great scenery. You have caught the light well and composed with excellent depth. Thanks for sharing.
Cheers, Paul.

Hi Pat,
Colours, sharpness and light are well...
I like this panaroma, you have captured all so well. TFS

best regards
daniel

Hallo Patricia!
A great and impressive picture! This stream of light coming from behind the dark slope works wonderful here. Your picture shows a somehow solemn atmosphere - in wonderful colours. In combination with your note a very good work! Thank you!
Greetings from Germany!

Hello Patricia,
Nice image with good light, but the hill in the shadows look blueisch for me.

Great shot! This looks so typical of the west coast, with big mountains coming right down to the water, and a perfect carpet of trees. Great lighting too, with some interesting clouds. Wonderful stuff!

Hi Patricia, excellent image, really beautiful with wonderful colours on the sky.
the view of that bia range of mounts is really...great!
the quality is good, as the POV and the excellent exposure.
thaks, ciao

This is beautiful Pat; the light and colours are stunning. Maybe the mountain on the left is too blue, but it seems to fit well with the tone of the whole image and I don't mind it at all. the reflected ligth on the water finishes off a wonderful image.
Kath

Hi Pat,
Splendid sunset, and wonderful landscape the one that you show us here. The POV is good, and your setting has a good angle.
The lighting is fantastic, the Sun gives a few beautiful sheens in the water while it illuminates the mountains of background. The color of the sky, the clouds and the silhouettes of the mountains compose a great image.
Great picture, and a good note, also.

Josep

The atmosphere of that sunrise is well rendered here, with nice soft colours and good exposure, nice framing and PoV

Hi Patricia
Such a beautiful light and contrasting sky and reflections. I like how the mountains stand out against the golden backdrop. It definitely does look like a difficult watercourse to negociate.
Thanks for showing the map. My Mum went cruising in the area a fews years ago and brought me back a beautiful handmade glass necklace from Sitka.

Nikki

very well done indeed..never been to Alaska..so..thank you for sharing such a beautiful shot!!
Take care and best regards!!

Hi Pat,
Beautiful view of sea, mountains and sunset. Reflections from water and sun shining to the slope on the right are the best details.
I think your PP is less subtle than with the iceberg shot. I tried my on WS starting with your original.
Kari

Pat, that is a remarkable shot! Certainly the PP gave life back to this shot. The POV and composition is still the same but the light and color conditions are totally different and worth to be seen. The ilumminated clouds and the mountains in the background gives an amazing sense of depth.
Well done!

Hi Patricia,
Well composed with the panorama format apropos here. There is strong lighting and I like your proportion of water to mountains. Your PP work is impressive to prevent over-exposure in spots. As usual, a most useful and educational note - I do agree with your comment about the ferry being preferable to the cruise ship for anyone serious about exploring the different areas. Well captured, Pat. Have a good weekend.

pat,
WOW!
excellent colorful capture. nice color separation after the pp work. your original version is no less perfect either.

Hi Patricia
I love such a colours. Nice composition and interesting note. I would visit Alaska of course, but have not enough time for a moment...

I like the PP that you have done on this, Pat - except for the blue glow around the tops of the pine trees - that's the only part that doesn't look natural. Kath's WS is excellent, and produces a more natural result, although I have to admit that your post has more impact. I thought your image was tilted looking at the sloping clouds in the middle, but it doesn't look tilted at the bottom - so I am am uncertain whether it is straight or not. Maybe clouds do go downhill in Alaska? Cheers . . . David

Patricia,

This is a superb photo. I like the most the colors, and the lighting in the picture. very sharp. A magazine photo indeed. Well done. Sothy

Hi Pat
The colours are out of the world...this is like a painting with the stunning colours in the sky & the reflections in the water. The blue of the mountains is so pleasing here, but I do like the original as well.

Olá Pat
Another great work of PP, of a very nice photo.
The ferry map seems like the Norwegian fjords. Seems a very good option to visit the area.

Hello Patricia,
It is simply wonderful how the light reflects off the water!
A very well composed image with a fine feeling of depth, where all details stand out very well...
Colours are great and typical of the Northern light!
Greetings,

Hello Patricia,

Hi Patricia. Wow that really is a stunning landscape you've got there. You get an A+ for your post-processing techniques. You were wise to run out and take a picture at this exact moment as it's wonderful. Perfect shot Pat!

Hi Pat,
This is an outstanding image with the gentle evening sky enhancing the calm silver water. The lighting is subperb which renerds a lovely blue cast on the mountains on the left and a golden glow to the mountains on the right. This is a tricky looking inlet and the poor boat captain has to concentrate on navigation while in all this beauty.
Regards, Tom

What a great shot Pet !!!!!!!!!
