[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Zion National Park is an interesting and aggravating place to photograph. The main canyon is essentially a channel that runs north and south with steep walls on the east and west. In most cases, it is not far across the canyon. When the morning sun finally crests the east rim, to capture the sweet light, one has to be ready. It is an awesome event to watch the sun find it's way down the eastern face of the west wall. Yet when the west wall is illuminated with the warm morning light, the contrast between the shadow and the specular illumination is incredible. When shooting 4x5 film, I have seen some pretty good "blooms" around the illuminated areas from lens flare (modern coatings are wonderful!).

The location for this portrait of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob was on the Virgin River, in a bend where there is some still water, and some rippled area too. The angle was about right. Note to self, equinox is a good time for this area. Later in the year, as in summer, the sun moves further north and the shadows are to acute.

To keep the foreground in the image and capture the full image, I used a 10mm lens. This does diminish the full sense of height as the peaks are about 6,800 ft and the elevation at the river is 3,800 ft give or take, that is aprox. 1000 meters difference. The base of the peaks may only be 750 meters away.

Not much modification in Capture and Lightroom. Cropping and slight rotation to balance the horizon, levels and a little USM.

Hi Dana,
Very nice colors and reflection
cheers

Hello Dana,
Nice image, good light on the summits.
I'm not convinced by your choice of the horizont in the middle dividing the picture in 2, since the foreground is less interesting I feel.

Didier

Spectacular shot! The reflection off the water really lightens the bottom of the frame, which would normally be very dark. I've been to Zion a few years ago, and you're right about the difficulties photographing there. I've never been in such a beautiful place that was so hard to photograph. Excellent!

Hello Dana!
Wonderful colours and light in your composition!
Lovely clarity, reflexion and good perspective!
Excellent done!
Lili

I like this image a tad more than the one you took to the right. Same bent tree, but the ripples of the water on the left give motion to the stream--breaking up the reflections of the peaks.

Love the colors and reflections, Dana, and the way the tree at the right of the frame accents the composition. The reflection offers a pleasing symmetry. Interesting texture in the lower left. Interesting interplay of light and shadow as well.

Great Shot Dana! Love the colour of the sky contrastin against the mountains. The reflection is excellent and the silhouetted tree is perfectly positioned. TFS. Paul.

Hi Dana,

Breathtaking and beautiful .. the stark rock and the leafless trees working against the life of the water is wonderful .. the way the dark foreground and bright light on the stone amplifies each other is wonderful as well,

take care,

John

Serwus Dana !
Good use of this powerful lens (i try to learn since month). The light on this powerful rocky formations is absolutely wonderful, they really glow in contrast with dark river. Very eye-catching work, a pleasure to look at.
Thanks and be well,
M.
