This dignified gentleman was kind enough to pose for me at the Annual Denver March Pow Wow, a large gathering of Native Americans from all Nations. I was fascinated by his facial makeup. I liked the duality of black and white on opposite sides of his face. I wonder if this was representative of a "Ying and Yang" principle. I spoke with him briefly and he siad that he was from one of the plains tribes and he went back to join the festivities. For more information on this event see my previous posting "Pow Wow Dancer#3".

This Native American is doing the classic warrior's stare, which I happen to respect. I prefer the directness of the warrior over polite "political correctness". He was actually a very nice and gracious person.

Stan -

The cold icy stare this guy gave you is rather menacing, I suspect that he is a Pawnee a rather brutal plains tribe. Excellent use of fill flash, nice catch light in the eyes, and perfect exposure. Well done!

Thank you for sharing

John

While still small you have an impressive and varied gallery. I like the tight crop on this portrait and that you came from his side and didn't do a police mugshot-type image. The flash has definitely worked well and has provided the glints in his eyes. He does have a chilling look about him, but I expect that was an act. Good work.

Hi Stan.. another excellent portrait of a Native American. I'm curious about which tribe he is from. If I had to guess, I would say he was Sioux, but I don't see anything that links him to any particular band. Critically speaking, I think a wider cropping would have been nice to show better his roach (headpiece), but still outstanding.

Visiting your gallery I found this portrait. I think this is a fantastic shot. You captured very well the stare and the colours of the make-up. IMO he doesn't have a too menacing look. Go and check a Maya festival... that's scary looking characters.

Hi Stan,
Speaking of under-rated !! This is an amzing portrait that feels very true. I see the look as one of dignity. The detail, color and framing are impeccable. As John notes, the light reflectionb in the eyes adds a lot of life.
