This is a photo that I took on assignment for the Denver Metro Convention and Visitors Bureau. This energetic young man was a dancer at the Annual Denver March Pow Wow which is held at The National Western Complex every year. Many of the Native American Nations participate in this large indoor pow wow which is held for three days in the middle of March. This was my favorite event of all time that the Convention Bureau hired me to do. I wish I could do it for them every year, but a few images is all they need of this event. If any of you happen to be in Denver during this time while skiing in Colorado this time of year I highly recommend that you attend this event. The photo opportunities are endless. Digital cameras also make this a much easier process than the film image that I took here. I set the shutter speed at 1/160 and set the fill flash at -1/3 with a pale amber gelatin filter to warm up the cool blue lighting from the flash.

Well done! Exposure is spot on and the use of fill flash allowed for vivid colors and stop action.
Thank you for sharing

Hi Stan. I think your use of fill flash has worked well here to both isolate the dancer from the background and also to freeze the action. Having shot a number of pow wows, I know with the ambient lighting and action, getting such results can be difficult.
I've taken the liberty of posting this to my theme "Lets Pow Wow.

Hi Stan, I have to say a couple of things bother me about this photo... one is all the black on the top third of the photo, too much for my taste, the other is I think you should have cropped a bit off the right-hand side, that empty space is really not doing anything there, and it sort of throws the photo off balance...
That said - it's a good colorful document of the event. That, and your note, do work to leave us with a desire to visit... so many places to visit...

I love the way you captured the detail of the dancer's face; he is clearly lost in the dance. It's not an easy task to get such great detail throughout; yet that face clearly makes the photo. Now this young fellow reminds me a LOT of the dancers from my childhood.
