Photographer’s Note

Another shot from my recent trip back home to Canada.

Approximately 4hrs into my flight from Vancouver to Tokyo, en route back to Singapore we are in the Bering Sea area.

I had the blind closed on my window for a couple hours when I happened to notice some guys sitting ahead of me taking photos out their windows. I opened my shutter to see this amazing sight. I jumped out of my seat and reached for my camera bag in the overhead compartment.

The Bering Sea covers over 2 million square km of the northernmost region of the Pacific Ocean. Its borders are defined to the north by Alaska, the Bering Strait, and northeastern Siberia, and to the south by the arc of the Alaska Peninsula, Aleutian Islands, and Commander Islands. The sea's largest embayments are the Gulf of Anadyr, Norton Sound, and Bristol Bay. The Anadyr River enters the sea from the west and the Yukon River from the east. The warm Japan Current has little influence on the Bering Sea, which has much ice; it can usually be traversed by ship only from June to October. The sea has many islands, notably Nunivak, St. Lawrence, Hall, St. Matthew, and the Pribilof Islands (all owned by the United States) and the Komandorski Islands (Russia).

Area: 884,900 sq. mi. or 2,291,900 sq. km
Average depth: 5,075 ft. or 1,547 m
Greatest known depth: 15,659 ft. or 4,773 m
Place of greatest known depth: Off Buldir Island

The Bering Sea is named after Danish explorer, Vitus Bering.

Impressive aerial view of the Bearing Sea. Is it true that at certain time of the year it freezes completely, uniting Alaska and the Siberia?

Hi Dan,
Very nice 'portrait' of Nature in her 'splendid' mood. Aprreciations for being able to capture this striking beauty irrespective of the thick window...you have lost no element in this.

Bonjour Dan,

This is a real nice picture. The POV of a Picture from a plan is unusual. The sun reflections trough the window create a nice effect.

Spectacular shot Dan, especially considering it was taken from an airplane window! The star burst sun is good, and the colour is rich and saturated. I like the curvature of the earth too, giving a great impression of vast distance. Great work!

Well its always interesting to see what kind of photo you will post from your trip to Canada. I was thinking you would pull out of your camera basket some Vancouver TE meeting in keeping with your last posting. And then a surprise from you on this gorgeous shot.
This shot reminds me of "The Beginnings" as in the Creation of the Earth in the first book of the Bible. And God said " Let there be Light and it was so".. these thoughts come to mind in this frame.

And I can see from the jets vantage point the lines of clouds below and land and sea details underneath in a vast area seldom travelled by mankind. I also love the curve on the horizon showing the curve of the globe...or the lens...lets say the globe..Very nice Daniel!

I came to think that those airplane' windows have a very special qualitity glass installed into...
A glass that create a very special effects filter.
Unless....?
Unless you opened that window Dan, just for better view (:-)))
Either way - the view is magnificent and your photo is nothing short of sheer beauty.

Spectacular Dan, great colours and composition. I think it's cool that you can see the curve of the earth, almost surreal. I've tried airplane shots before, but nothing like this.

Wow, what a dramatic view of this field of ice. And it get a lot of impact from the midnightsun in the middle. Very well taken, hard to notice that t was taken through the window.

Hi Dan. Considering how large the Bering Sea this is just about the best way to fit a chunk in. The super fast shutter speed sure gave you some good sharpness.

This is indeed an fantastic view! Always impressive to see the earth from high above. The nice curve of the horizon, the trails of the clouds, and here, the pattern of the ice.

Hello Dan,
it wa time you woke up and see this, man!!:D It would be a real tough task to wipe those window reflection with PS and actually, I don't think it would be so useful as after some thoughts, I prefer to see it as they are so subtle and add something...the feeling that this is not really like in the movie...more comfortable;D
The colors are awesome as anyone can see. Beautiful catch Dan!
To answer Enrique's question, I was taught at school that during a certain period of history, the strait was frozen and that allowed homosapien to populate the continent...but I don't think that it is still the case now as it is 92 km wide... see : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bering_Strait

It's amazing to get such a good shot from a plane. Are you sure you didn't had you're cape on and flew yourself? :)

Spectacular scene! Impressive pattern of the clouds shining in the low sunshine. The description of the horizon that looks rotundly is also good. The halation of the sunshine in the deep blue is very effective.
