Photographer’s Note

Location: American Fork Canyon in the Wasatch Mountains, Utah.

About the Photo: It was raining slightly so everything was wet. I thought it looked nice. I average metered the entire scene, and then underexposed it by 2/3 stop to help saturate the colors.

Nice work--you composed a very strong foreground, contributing to a feeling of great depth. i like the idea of underexposing for saturation purposes, it served you well. Nice work!

Wonderful fall picture. I like the bright yellow leaves on the dark green moss. And the white water on the small river guides they eyes further into woods..

The mix of colours is stunning thanks to the autumnal yellow leaves fallen on the green rocks. The continuity of the flowing water is well captured.

What a lovely shot, a smooth everything with deep rich colors... wonderful. But I have to say that the yellow leaves burn through the picture, and I can't seem to unstuck my eyes from them (they act as a magnet...). Perhaps if they had been a little lower in the shot or then a bit darker, then they wouldn't jump out as much.
Other than that I really like the compositon, with the smooth water passing us by, the soft wetness coming through everything. It's quite lovely indeed!

There must be more, and that more is the eye of the photographer and the knowledge how to deal with such images. This is a great photo, in a lot of ways.

Nice work Ryan! The yellows and green are perfectly warm which confirms a good decision on the exposure. The blur of the water is subtle and appropriate for the scene, don't want to steal too much attention from the colorful leaves.

You really know how to use a vertical composition. I like the way the river takes our eyes from left bottom to the top righ...very smooth. The scenario is fantastic and you did well underexposing...if not the yellow leaves in the foreground would blow out. The use of the polarizer in a wet place was a good idea of course (not everybody seems to know that a polarizer just cuts reflected - polarized - light).

How do you pack and use your gear when you go out to the rain? When it's raining I stay home afraid to damage my gear.

Definition and rendered details are outstanding in this well framed vertical. The limited light allowed You to show us the beauty of the scene in all its glory, without shades. This is a real sacred spot and i'm still impressed by the way how "easily" You find such ones in Your vicinity.

I am amazed by your technique,you did create so much light on an overcast day,but I am surprised that the yellow leaves are this close to everexposure.
Good veretical composition,dynamic and a richness in well saturated colors.

Beauty, Ryan. Nice diagonal composition with the river. Nice colors, to (I've been noticing how much underexposure saturates my colors, but I was beginning to think it was a Nikon artifact; apparently, it's not.

Hi Ryan,
Really good composition and background detail. How did you do to expose 2 s with only a cir polarizer without overexposing the picture? I have been trying this kind of shot with a cir-pol, and a ND cokin filter but I loose all the colours and so the shot ends up being dull...
