Photographer’s Note
Here's another shot of the lighthouse on Anacapa Island, which is part of Channel Islands National Park off the coast of Ventura, California.
Yesterday I posted a simple closeup shot of the same lighthouse:

Today's shot gives you a better feel for the context of the lighthouse. It commands a dramatic position atop these basaltic lava cliffs.
This shot was actually taken right around sunrise but because of the heavy low-lying clouds that morning, there really was no sunrise. Instead, the sky was pretty much a drab white out. So I post this more to show the photographic potential of this location under better lighting conditions.
Since it was not a particularly bright morning, I did use the low light to experiment with some long exposures on the water to achieve the glassy look. I used a polarizer, ND3 and an ND6 to push the exposure to a minute.
I used Photoshop's channel mixer to do the B&W conversion.
One last thing. Like I pointed out in yesterday's post, this island is a breeding ground for Western gulls and so they are everywhere on this small island. If you look towards the lower right of the frame, a Western gull once again made its way into the image.
Regards,
Doug

Hi Doug,
two things came to my mind when I saw this picture. The ocean looks perfectly smooth, almost like a clean floor. The other, the rock where the lighthouse sits looks like a big turtle head and the front foot is on the lower right hand corner. That's just my mind late at night.
Anyway, I like this picture. Very nice that is in BW. I see good details and very good perspective of the lighthouse and the massive cliff. The sky is too white I think but overall the picture is nice :-)

the b&w conversion looks to have paid off because the shot has turned out quite well. my only thing is that the sky is still too bright and so, the outline of the lighthouse has been effected. i do like the addition of the gull. it's like "where's waldo?".. nice job

Hi Douglas. Nice photo, your long exposure has certainly smoothed out the ocean. Excellent composition and POV. Thanks for sharing.
Cheers, Paul.
