The New Dungeness Lighthouse sits on the end of the 4 mile long Dungeness Spit, the longest natural sand spit in the world. The lighthouse has been guiding ships along the Strait of Juan de Fuca and into the port at Sequim, Washington since 1857. In 1993 the lighthouse was added to the National Register of Historic Places and in 1994 the Coast Guard turned over responsibilty for operation and maintenance of the light to the U. S. Lighthouse Society. While open to the public the light can only be reached by hiking along the spit at low tide, or by boat.
In the foreground, and protected by the spit, is the Dungeness National Wildlife Sanctuary. In the distance can be seen Vancouver Is., British Columbia. |
