Exemplifying some new trends, this young Dad, originally from France, and his New Yorker partner adopted this little boy out of the hellish mass orphanages of Rumania. The boy looks to have gypsy heritage, not surprisingly given the former Ceausescu regime's vile record on ethnic minorities. What sort of life he could have hoped for, should he have survived long enough there, is questionable to say the least.
I first spotted them on the boardwalk in Fire Island Pines, the Dad holding his boy's hand as the latter skipped merrily along singing tunelessly obviously filled with the joy childhood ought to be full of. My heart almost burst, they were so beautiful together, my only regret being not having my camera ready. When, a few hours latter I spotted them again, I asked permission to photograph them so I could keep forever fresh the memory of all they represented that was good in the world:
Tolerance, generosity, hope and love.
But I still wish I could have captured that magic moment on the boards.....
