Being someone who finds plane travel too mundane and so 20th century I decided to travel from Detroit to Rome the 21st century way in the light tunnel.

You see, you enter this long illuminated tunnel filled with soothing chords and tones. You can go first class on a moving walkway or you can go standard class on your own power. As you move through the the sounds and colors change in gentle and soft patterns creating a psychedelic atmosphere of total relaxation.

Slowly you make your way through passing people traveling in the opposite direction through this wormhole type structure and then you suddenly find yourself at the opposite end, your destination.

Up the escalator you quickly climb, excited that your entire 8000 kilometer trip took only a few minutes. At the top you look around and you're finally there... You're in the next terminal!

But it is Romulus so does it kind of count as Rome? No, not really.

Ok, so you only travelled a quarter mile or so beneath the tarmac from one terminal to another. And really you didn't even need to because the international flights are all in the terminal you just left.

So you do the trip again, this time first class on the moving walkway and before you know it you're standing at the fountain at the origin and walking to a gate for a long and mundane flight from Detroit to Amsterdam and on to Rome. The hope you'd be at your destination in a few minutes is finally replaced by the reality that you have another 12 hours.

So you sit down at the gate and watch on the large screen television CNN repeatedly showing newly released video footage of American Airlines Flight 77 being crashed into the Pentagon four and a half years earlier. And you start to get butterflies in your stomach as you wait to board your flight.

For more views of the light tunnel you can see photos of it in other colors here.
