Photographer’s Note

An old growth Douglas Fir tree in the Sol Duc river valley. Douglas Firs on the Olympic Penninsula are larger than any other living thing besides the giant redwoods of California. Firs here are known to reach 90 meters (over 300 feet) in height but the trunks are not as large in circumference as the redwoods or even red cedars.

Difficult exposure with the bright sunlight and deep shadows. Resized, levels, curves, USM.
