Photographer's Note

Pre-dawn Joshua Tree silhouettes in the Mojave National Preserve.

This preserve protects a large swath of the Mojave desert in southeastern California and showcases some outstanding geology.
In this area you'll find large sand dunes, volcanic cinder dunes, mountains, limestone caverns, and some of the densest Joshua Tree forests that exist.

The preserve is very primitive so don't expect any services and come prepared with extra water and a full gas tank. There are numerous dirt roads to explore and disbursed car camping is permitted in some areas.

The preserve is also not too far from Las Vegas.

This picture was taken near the Cima Dome part of the preserve, it's where the Joshua Trees are the thickest. It was captured about 30-45 minutes before sunrise. When I saw the amazing sky that morning, I knew I wanted to make those colors the focus along with the interesting shapes of the Joshua trees. I exposed for the sky letting the trees go black for a complete silhouette.

For post processing - I used neat image to reduce noise in the sky, USM, brightened the image overrall +7.Colors were not manipulated.

Regards,
Doug
