Look Ma, NO Net!

This is a second offering from the Fourth of July Parade in Larkspur, California. A troupe of acrobats stopped about fifty feet from where I stood to put on a demonstration of skill and daring. They are members of a club in San Francisco raising money for AIDS research. The red buckets you see scattered about are used to collect funds from the audience.
I started snapping photos without any idea what was involved in their routine. Like most folks lining the sidewalk I was shocked when those at the top of the pyramid of acrobats threw this man into the air. I was very lucky to capture his beautiful dive TOWARD THE ASPHALT PAVEMENT! No net for this daring young man! Instead he relied on the sure hands of his compatriots who caught him before he struck the pavement. If you look closely beyond the flying acrobat, you'll see open mouths and pointing fingers as others looked on in disbelief at his daring.
I surely wasn't alone in pulling a few bills out of my pocket after witnessing this dramatic display. Lets give the guy a big round of applause! |

This intrepid young man could be maimed for life on an accident. You captured a magnificent action shot! Very nicely done Curtis.

Without doubt, a great capture, Curtis.
It is a very dramatic shot. From this angle it looks as if the flying acrobat is on a trajectory to hit the guy in the white t-shirt, but I suppose he was actually thrown vertically up.
I have to scroll up and down in my browse to view the whole composition - which slightly spoils it for me. I did a quick cut'n'paste in my editing software and a square format also works well here.
Hey Curtis,
These amazing humans are from Cheer SF http://www.cheersf.org/ they are amazing, and contribute so much to our society. I am very lucky to work with one of guys you photographed here. I sent him the link to this photo and he had no end of praise not only for the photo but for the beautifully written note.
The photo is great you caught them so well He seems about to fly over the hills. What I like the very most about this is the shadows on the asphalt. I do wish there would be a bit more space on the right side as a leg is a bit cut off, but that's a very minor detail. Well caught.
Great action shot Curtis - it reminds me of various concerts I've been to where people stage dive & slam dive, relying on a sense of faith that their fellow music fans will catch them. I guess that in this case it was at least choreographed, but there must still be that element of doubt, of 'what if...' involved!
Apart from the main diver, there are a couple of other little details about this troupe that catch my eye. Firstly the guy on the right who's standing on the shoulders of the others - it looks as if he is throwing the chap in mid-air!
Secondly, the girl on the left, away from the main group - is she watching in excitement or rooted to that spot in fear? It's the beauty of still photography - the moment is captured but to the beholder anything could be happening, and anything is possible!
Great image! :)
Doesn't this guy have a spine???And he is really flying high!
I like the action in the shot Curtis, and the concentration. It's nice to see all these muscles tightened.
This shot really shows that you need cooperation and trust in one another, as without these two ingredients this group wouldn't exist anymore (and maybe people would have gotten injured). And the way they contribute with these shows to the Aids reserach is really great. I applaud them.
