Photographer’s Note
I took this photo last summer right by the Santa Monica Pier. They have a memorial set up for all the soldiers who have died in Iraq. I found it strange to see this family pic-nicing amongst the memorial- perhaps they were sitting by the cross of a loved one?

Wow. This is a fairly moving and powerful image - I see there are a variety of crosses there - Christian, Orthodox, Star of David...and some in red.
I'd imagine you are right about that family paying their private tribute to one of their own. Seems strange, teir private grief while in the background the surf and sun-worshippers...a striking contrast.
A great image for Trekearth, I think.

There is even the Crescent Moon.
Very strange, powerful scene indeed. I guess this is more a protest than a tribute; did you get that feeling?
Update: I made a similar photo which I posted as Arlington West, Santa Barbara.
