Photographer’s Note

The Golden gate bridge. Not an original picture, but funny enough, it does not look always that red. It displays the brightest colour at late afternoon or at sunset, when it is not hidden in the fog! I took this picture the first time I saw it, and it never has seemed as red since...

The Golden Gate Bridge was the largest suspension bridge in the world when it was built in 1937.
The color of the bridge is orange vermilion, deemed International Orange. The color was selected because it enhances the bridge's visibility in fog.

On the less happy side... From 1995 to 2003, on average there was one suicide jump every two weeks, which brought the unofficial total to over 1,300 suicides. Several attempts to introduce a suicide barrier have been thwarted by engineering difficulties, high costs, and public opposition. Jump for Life is a petition being circulated for the Board of Directors as an alternative and proposes that bungee jumping should be permitted from the bridge.
