Photographer’s Note

The loveliness of Paris
Seems someshow sadly gay.
The glory that was Rome
Is of another day.

I've been terribly alone
And forgotten in Manhattan
I'm going home
To my city by the bay.

I left my heart
In San Francisco
High on the hill

It calls to me.
To be where little cables cars
Climb halfaway to the stars!
The morning fog may chill the air.

I don't care!
My love waits there in San Francisco

Above the blue and windy sea.
When I come home to you

San Francisco
Your golden sun will shine for me!

I left my heart
...

It was written in 1954. The music was written by George Cory, the lyrics by Douglas Cross.A recording of the song by Tony Bennett became a chart hit in 1962 and adopted by the city of San Francisco as a signature song. It has often been performed in public by Bennett on special occasions as well as in concert, most notably in the final National Football League game at Kezar Stadium featuring the San Francisco 49ers and at the reopening of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge after sections of the bridge were damaged by the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake. It was also sung by Frank Sinatra.
