Photographer’s Note
AYMINY (A Yorkshire Man In New York) is a series of shots I took on a short visit to New York.
This is my My 14th post.
This shot is one of the clock situated outside the Hilton Hotel in Times square.
I am also posting shots on my TrekLens site.
Times square was originaly called Longacre Square, it acquired it's new name when it was renamed after the New York Times building that dominated the new district was built in 1904.
At the end of that year the Times held a New Year's Eve celebration to commemorate their successful drive to rename Longacre Square.
Ever since, hundreds of thousands of people gather and wait for hours in the cold for the famous ball drop ceremony.
During the First World War, Times Square became the main theatre district of the USA.
It was during the 1960's and 1970's that live nude shows, erotic bookstores, and X-rated movie houses occupied the area.
In the 1980's, businesses and public officials began to change the square's reputation.
With new legislation and building condemnation, Times Square began to change.
By 1993 there were 36 adult establishments, down from a high of 140 in the late 1970's.
By the late 1990's, Times Square achieved the cleaned up 'family friendly' image it has now, perhaps it's a little duller too...

Hi stephen! i really like this urban shot! and this natural tilt! i first wondered whether you tilted or whether it was real and then i realized the horizontal writing... nice clear and sharp shot! it is incredible that you did not need a flash and yet are so well focused.
I agree about the dullness of the area nowadays...

Great juxtoposition of the circular clock and the word square. I also like the perspective, which is more interesting than a straight on shot. Impressive shot for one taken at night. Great work!

I like that you spotted this motive, Stephen (and I'm kicking myself for not doing so during my NYC visit in May ;). A nice graphical quality obtained in this upward view - the clock face and the surrounding signs and writings blend into a good photo. And the clock is a nice metaphor to accompany the information in your note.

Well done.

there is a fun and subtle contrast here: Square and the circle clock above it. I find this highly enjoyable, Stephen! I also like the mood here. Again, clarity is wonderful in this image.
