Photographer’s Note
Watching the planes go by ... Lake Michigan between Oak St. and North Ave. beaches on the breakwaters, Chicago Air and Water Show, August 20, 2005.
In this photograph, just like Woman, Man, Man, Woman photograph, I wanted to show the diversity of Chicago and the emerging visibility (and beauty) of South Asians in the USA.
As I already pointed out, the South Asian (Indians, Pakistanis, Bangladeshis, Sri Lankans, Nepalese, Tibetans etc.) population of Chicago is quite large (about 125,000 as of 2000 census) and as a group, is wealthier and better educated than most immigrant communities. South Asians are generally seen as an ideal minority in Chicago (and nationally) which is good, but also masks the fact that the community has needs like everyone else such as access to services and affordable health care.
