[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
I'd intended to continue posting photos from the rock concert I attended on Sunday but construction started yesterday in front of my home and I decided to visit the men at work with my camera. The project involves installing a new water main in the middle of the pavement that will eventually be connected to all the homes on the street.

In another lifetime I was a construction inspector, so I always find men at work fascinating. The segments of the pipe must be welded together and then the connectors for homes have to be welded onto the pipe, which is what is happening here. I took a number of photos of the welder but this one caught my eye, since it is the only one where flames rose from the welding site. Below the pipe you see the darkened trench into which the pipe will eventually be placed.

I've included a workshop that consists of a photo montage of the work in progress. This is the street on which I live.

Hi Curtis, delightful dark and attractive picture with excellent light. The mood is nice here, I like the details in it, like the wood on which the pipe is lying, the hammer, and the shovel. Beautiful flames and spark, I'm glad your shutterspeed was high enough so that the flames are frozen.
It's a sort of tribute to ordinary work, I like that. Just monday I was at one of the worksheds here, and one guy was busy making very beautiful things out of plexiglass, and I wanted to take pictures of that too. I too like working people.
I love you workshop.

Hi Curtis,

Great combination of hot flame and cool blue.
Exposition is very short, so I guess that light comes generally from the flame itself, which is a great idea. Also, the worker is colored with reflective blue, so it gives another dimention to this image.
Well done.

i just love that blue pipe crossing the image from north to south, and the flame and the sparkles.
you made a very beautiful image, very pleasing to the eyes, from an ordinary (for them) moment in their day.

Dear Curtis,
Very nice picture, the flames attract my eyes and the constrat with the rest is realy nice !
Regards, Fabien

I have been meaning to get back to this photo for some time, Curtis. What caught me right away was the capture of the torch flame and sparks. In addition the good, strong, contrast adds to the feel of the torch as some kind of living thing dancing on the pipe. And that contrast, in coupled with the textures of the workers protective clothes add to the gritty feel overall. I think maybe a crop of the right side might be an idea here. Have the pipe go right down to the corner, and drop the shovel. Still really well photographed, Curtis with a nice eye to documenting the scene as your montage shows. Perhaps your city could use an official photographer to document events of all kinds that take place there. And even if they have one perhaps another. :)
