Photographer's Note

Taken from our airplane as we passed over Mount Rainier.

Mount Rainier is a volcano located in Pierce County, Washington. It's the highest point in the state and part of the Cascade Range.

Most people in Seattle refer to Rainier as ‘The Mountain,’ hence the picture title.

The last eruption was in 1854, though the U.S. Geological Survey put together a Mt. Rainier Volcano Warning System in place in 1998. Though there is no imminent risk of eruption, officials predict that it will erupt again.

Now it is a National Park, where one can hike, cross country ski, or take photos. It was William McKinley who established the area surrounding it as a national park (the country's fifth) for its own preservation.
