Build a structure that provides the widest possible view of Grand Canyon yet harmonizes with its setting: this was architect Mary Colter's goal when the Fred Harvey Company hired her in 1930 to design a gift shop and rest area at Desert View. Colter's answer was the Watchtower.

A perfectionist, Colter scrutinized every detail, down to the placement of nearly every stone. Each stone was handpicked for size and appearance. Weathered faces were left untouched to give the tower an ancient look. With a lavish, highly publicized dedication ceremony, the Watchtower opened in May 1933.

The Indian Watchtower is at the eastern end of the south rim of the Grand Canyon accessible by the Desert View drive from the southern rim

great picture. i like that you chose black and white. color would have taken away from the clouds and simple beauty of it all. thanks for the detailed notes. i always appreciate that.

Perfecht sharpness and beautiful POV. I thought, the tower is from middleages, but then I read your note.

Hi Thien !
Really interesting point of view, and perfect choice of B&W. It gives a dramatic sky, and a really nice effect on the left side of the picture.

Unfortunately it's a bit strange to me in the right side. Looks too grainy, to much contrasted. Maybe is it because of too much post proceesing ? We clearly see a white border between the tower and the sky, for instance.

Interesting note.
Cheers,
Youssef

Stunning picture with a dramatic sky that lends itself well to the overall image. Had to check out your gallery after this - it rates amongst your best ( you have a wide variety of styles / original images )..This photo has lovely detail all the way through ....its beautifully captures the canyon for me.

HI Thien
Superbe et dramatique paysage, superbe le choix B&W
Very nice shot
Toni

Wow, what a sight, what a picture. Beautiful b/w.

Woha, Thien, this is GREAT! You know I don't go for landscape shots too often, but this one has to be clicked and has to be seen full side. I really like the compo with the tower off to the side and the sky is perfect...dramatic enough to make it interesting, but also does not overpower the rest of the image. Excellent work, mate!

I have been several times to the grand canyon! Very nice, moody photo! Her tower does resemble the old Indian ruins!

Bonjour Thien! Long time no see... You've been missed, like so many more of the "oldies"! ;o)))

Good choice of B&W, makes the sky even more reliefed and dramatic. And you got such a depth, it's very impressive. Thank you.

* In a way, it reminded me of the Tower of Babel - more the Van Cleve's one than Brueghel's...
