Photographer’s Note

I had taken pictures of this statue (at Menemsha Beach, on Martha's Vineyard) before, but usually with a blue sky behind it. The sun was setting fast, and I wanted to get to closer to the harbor and the water, but I knew this would make for a dramatic image against the backdrop of sky and clouds. I made my way about 50 yards across the supposedly deer-tick infested sand dunes, until I had the statue between me and the setting sun. A few shots later I was headed toward the marina and about fifteen minutes worth of sunset pictures.

I did practically no post-processing, just adjusted the levels a little, and sharpened and resized the image before uploading it. I did play with several versions of the image with different frames and with parts of the statue extending into the border (and I may post one of those on TrekLens -- here it is), but I decided finally that the image stood on its own.
