Photographer's Note

This monument is something of a recent addition to the complex where the Vietnam Veterans Memorial is located, having been dedicated only in November, 1993. It's dedicated to the female veterans of the war, 90 percent of whom were nurses, which are depicted here. Others served as physicians, physical therapists, air traffic controllers, communications specialists, intelligence officers and clerical workers; almost all volunteered. Eight women are listed on the Wall. Reportedly, more than 50 US civilian women, who served a number of other functions, died in Vietnam, however. The piece here shows three uniformed women tending a wounded soldier. Reportedly, the women are shown looking upward (Hope), praying (Faith) and caring for the soldier (Charity). The sculpture was designed by Glenna Goodacre. A scale model can also be found at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial State Park in Angel Fire, New Mexico. The official site states that over 265,000 women have served in the US armed forces, with about 10,000 serving during the conflict.
