Photographer’s Note

It was my first time in Grand Canyon National Park.

Grand Canyon is 277 miles long, 18 miles across in places, and in one point has depth 6,200 feet. Colorado River and its tributaries formed this colossal landform.

There are several theories about this process but Colorado River has run trough the canyon for only 5 to 10 million years.

Colorado River begins in Rocky Mountain National Park; it is widely used for water supply of agriculture and cities. Numerous reservoirs named “lakes” were constructed from headstream to almost Mexican border. Colorado River meets Gulf of California not every year… The largest of them are Lake Powell upstream Grand Canyon and Lake Mead downstream.

You can see Colorado River from only few points on the South Rim.

Prime season is July and August. Try to visit at another time or, if you can’t come during the off-season, I recommend being an “early bird”. Main part of visitors can’t travel without breakfast, so you can have 2—3 hours out of crowd. Another option is to come after 3pm, when numerous visitors drive away…

Grand Canyon is a difficult object for photography. It is so large that your camera couldn’t exhibit this… Another problem is a light haze (I am not sure that it is right term for the mist because of hot earth surface). It is practically unavoidable after 10am in fair day.

In very cold January morning we observed a mist in the bottom of canyon just after sunrise and this haze 2 hours later…

I was lucky this afternoon, it was cloudy weather and an hour later a thunderstorm started. So, no gaze and nice clouds in the sky.
