Laguna Mission Church was built in 1699 in the Pueblo of Laguna, New Mexico. It is 45 miles west of Albuquerque close to the historic Route 66 which bisects the pueblo land. Visiting or photographing the pueblo can only be done with local permission. We were not allowed inside or to walk closer to the entrance. However, a very friendly man allowed us to take photographs from a distance. It is constructed of stone, adobe, mortar and plaster.
Pueblos are communities of native Americans in south-west USA. The buildings are of stone, adobe mud mixed with other materials. Adobe is a mixture of sand, clay and water mixed with sticks, straw and sometimes manure.

Black and white was an excellent choice here. The shot is well composed with the mission nicely counterbalanced by the tree on the right. The image has a fine range of tones and excellent sharpness.

I know there is nothing to fear in God's house, but this Church looks scary. The choice of B&W, the barren trees, the white church contrasting against the black sky all add up to the mood. Fantastic conversion to B&W. Nice capture, thanks for sharing.

Ciao e buon fine settimana

Classic image of the church in monochrome.Nice colors, clarity and light. TFS.

Superb contrasts of this b&w capture. It looks great, wonderful work!
Have a fine weekend.

Hello dear Ann,
For a great and hardshell friend of b&w photography this capture is a great weekend gift for me !
Interesting notes. Adobe is also a wellknown construction technique here in Turkey (mainly in the countryside) !
TFS and have a nice weekend

A very interesting and informative note and a very striking photograph too.
I'm wondering if you might have used a polarising filter for this one as the sky is incredibly dark. Whether you did or not, that sky makes a fabulous backdrop to the white church which stands out stunningly against it. Your composition is excellent, the trees nicely framing either side of the church, your exposure is bang-on and the details and sharpness are absolutely exquisite, especally when viewed at full size of 1400 pixels wide.
P.S. But what did you clone out of or into this picture? You see, the "url" of this image has the word "cloned" in it but whatever you've done, I can't detect it here! :o)

The contrast between whitewashed church and the dark sky looks superb.
Interesting note too!
chrislo (4155) 2014-02-08 14:51
A great shot of this old church set against the dark cloudless sky that enhances it so beautifully. The viewpoint is excellent, and I love the way you have incorporated the trees to the right, whilst the tree on the left soften the lines of the building. The black and white choice makes this shot so much more effective. A nicely composed photograph.
CLODO (31098) 2014-02-09 2:25
Good choice to convert in B&W, the church stands out of the dark sky (as if you used a red filter), and the trees branches are as if taken with an infra red vision.

love this! A stunning B&W study, with beautifully rendered and attractive tones that just make the white church walls smack you in eyes so irresistibly. Composition, execution and presentation here just flawless. A real cracker of an image Ann.
Enjoy your Sunday - B.

Now that is what I call a strong composition. The strong contrast in this black and white scene enhances the beauty but somewhat forlorn scene. More a piece of art than a simple photograph.
have a great sunday
subhendu_bagchi (25935) 2014-02-09 4:25
wow, excellent presentation of the view of church with the tree in foreground. I like the black and white tone for it. It suits the presentation. Excellent work. Tfs.
saxo042 (37596) 2014-02-09 5:44
The very strong contrasts between the building and the sky creates a very eerie impression. A remarkably good picture and the total lack of people enhances these feelings. A beautiful composition.

Ciao Ann, fascinating B&W composition with lovely church, superb sky, splendid light and wonderful clarity, very well done my friend, ciao Silvio

It is refreshing to see such a good B&W photo, which forces the photographer to pay special attention to fundamentals such as composition and exposure and DOF without the distraction of color. Exquisitely rendered, as usual.
SnapRJW (31621) 2014-02-09 20:58
Hello Ann - What interests me about this shot is the way the building methods and materials dictate the style of the building, it is very much of the 'place', even the cross on top looks different. Does it have barbed wire wrapped around it or are they Christmas lights? B&W works well here, I love the composition with the dark sky making a great canvas against which the tree look superb. Warm regards Rosemary

Hi dear Ann, how are you?
Sorry for my no contact as so busy recently
Wow very artstic and also solemn image. The best choice of B&W color touch, Monocro's characteristics are so well presented.
All the best and have a good new week! TAKERO

Have a nice evening.

we have more and more B&W pictures lately on TE and I´m really happy about it.
Yours is truly superb!
I like the way you composed the scene, but the most I enjoy your treatment in monochrome, which creates here the whole mood of this scene(love the strong contrast between white facade of the church and black sky!very expressive!)
Have a nice day

at the first sight I though this white washed church was in Greece. Especially its front reminds me of some traditional buildings in Kyklades.
There is very fine contrast between the church and dark sky - I like it a lot. The trees add some life to the composition and the whole image seems to be very well planned.
Good contrast, sharpness and well handled light.
Thanks for sharing
photoray (12968) 2014-02-12 11:19
Ideal high contrast view of Laguna Mission, with the adobe architecture radiating white, and a comparison with Nature's stark leaf less trees, then high altitude wisp of clouds.
williewhistler (14995) 2014-02-14 7:22
I do admire your technique in converting this to mono, there are a fine range of tones and just the right amount of contrast for my taste.
Whilst the mission Church and the fortuitously open door is the main attraction it`s the way that you have used the trees to frame the image that I particularly like, with the three crosses across the diagonals also a big plus point.
Heavy rain has now been replaced with high wind and squally showers, another horrible day.
Hope you are staying dry.
Kind regards Les.

I have to admit, New Mexico is a little of a mystery to me, don't really know much about it.
when i viewed the 'new mexico' photos on TE, almost all have the overwhelming orange tinge because of the desert landscape...so this one is refreshingly unique.
love how the cross stands out, and how the tree branches stand out too.
lovely exposure and transfer to black and white.
did you ADD darkness to the corners? if so, it worked out brilliantly.
wonderful visual here, a job well done.
npecanhuk (68104) 2014-02-15 14:05
Very beautiful black & white picture of such lovely details!
Exposure, level of sharpness and composition are true highlights here too!
TFS - congrats,
Enjoy your Sunday,

Gidday dear Ann
The first thought I had - after saying WOW - was - why doesn't Ann post more B&W? This is simply superb. A beautifully converted and processed monochrome image, with exquisite contrasts and plays of light. I love the way the white adobe church contrasts against the dark sky. The details have been captured effortlessly. A stunning piece of photography, congrats.
jemaflor (87291) 2014-02-18 23:02
interesting version in B&W, good result and nice contrast with this white church, well composed also with the tree, great sharpness.
willperrett (7630) 2014-02-19 0:38
Sorry to be late with my comment, but you know I can't resist a good monochrome. You've proved that b/w on this site is not necessarily less popular than colour! But that's because this is a thoroughly superior monochrome, harking back to the days of film and filtration. This looks so much as if it were taken with a red filter on your lens, to achieve that dramatic dark sky. Instead I suppose that it was achieved in P'shop, maybe using the B/w dialogue box to pull the red slider to the Dark Side! It doesn't matter: the effect of the white building against the dark sky is excellent. And the composition ain't bad either!

Good choice to go B&W, the church looks like it is glowing! I like the strong contrast. I've been to this church when I live in Albuquerque long time ago, beautiful little town. Well done, tfs.
siudzi (34119) 2014-02-21 23:53
What an eye-catching b&w presentation of this white church! My first idea was around Greece not the US so the surprise was really big:) Well seen and perfectly composed one. TFS!
Have a nice weekend!
SWEETFREEDOM (23064) 2014-03-01 23:45
i like very much the use of b/w in this shot. excellent contrast and p.o.v.
adores (39179) 2014-03-06 7:02
A simple and beautiful church, as I like them :)! I like it in b&w and the composition is very good with the little cross on the right and the bare trees. The light is perfect also!
Gigidusud (17277) 2014-03-07 14:41
I do not like much B & W but I must say here that provides a dramatic atmosphere, the composition is very successful. Very well done!
Have a nice Week-end my friend.
