Downtown Seattle Transit Tunnel
The Downtown Seattle Transit Tunnel, also referred to as the Metro Bus Tunnel, is a 1.3-mile (2.1 km) public transit tunnel that runs the length of downtown Seattle, from 9th Avenue and Pike Street to 5th Avenue S. and S. Jackson Street. Approved by Metro Transit in 1983,construction began in 1987.It was completed and service began in 1990, at a total cost of $455 million. In May 2000, the King County Council transferred ownership to Sound Transit but ownership was transferred back to King County Metro in 2002.
The tunnel was closed on September 24, 2005 for modification to accommodate both buses and Sound Transit's Central Link light rail trains on a shared alignment. Prior to closure, around two dozen bus routes ran through the tunnel. The buses were dual-powered, using electricity in the tunnel from an above wire connection and diesel on city streets. It reopened on Monday, September 24, 2007.The two-year closure included retrofits for light rail as well as other operating system upgrades. Also, a stub tunnel, branching from the main tunnel, was constructed under Pine Street between 7th and Boren Avenues to allow light rail trains to stop and reverse direction and for future extension of Central Link.
Due to the conversion to light rail, the dual-mode buses that are powered by the above electric connection can no longer operate in the tunnel. Those buses have already been replaced by Metro's current new fleet of hybrid buses. While these buses produce significantly more emissions than electric trolley buses that use overhead wires, they produce fewer emissions than standard diesel buses, and require no connection to overhead wires.
Since the floor of the tunnel was lowered for the light rail, there have been concerns that the bus mirrors are now at head height and may strike those who are waiting on the platform. To prevent this, the mirrors are equipped with flashing lights. As well, the buses' speed limit as they approach and leave stations has been lowered from 15 miles per hour (24 km/h) to 10 miles per hour (16 km/h).
The tunnel is entirely within the Ride Free Area, so no fare is required on buses at any station during hours when the policy is in effect. Due to Sound Transit's different fare structure, fares are required on Central Link light rail trains.

The large curved ceiling frames this place in a very good way. The parallel lines of the platforms and tracks are focusing to the red brake-lights at the entrance of the tunnel. A very calm and mood here, an interesting capture of daily life.

A fine photojob underground's, Danos, well managed the light conditions.
Sharp details and deppth, the far tunnels lights are exquisitely shown on picture, and people/passangers added life to the scene.

This is a good interior shot with diagonal lines giving deepness. The exposure time did a great job for the sharpness and the light management. I like the passengers in the waiting, giving an interesting life in the city concept.

This wide, spacious underground bus terminal makes quite impressive photo subject. Good perspective and exposure. I just wish one of the buses would be a bit closer.

haha...I've been here.
I took photos from the top of the train station.
this place sort of looks like a spaceship!
cool to see the ceiling from this low vantage point for a change.
cool shot from Seattle, but its not a very good area of town.
enjoy your day

Great way to make use out of some down time waiting for a bus. :) A scene that probably wouldn't necessarily appeal to most, but you were able to find some aesthetics from this point of view. The composition lends itself well to the obvious tunnel effect, but it's the reflective tracks and yellow striping that makes this a strong perspective, easily guiding the eye to the far end...and off we go! Enjoy the day ahead.

Interesting note and urban details of Seattle!
Attractive transportation & daily life picture!

You're capturing well this Transit Tunnel by a good angle and excellent tone/clarity, so it's interesting and impressive to see the terminal with both of bus and rail train. It's also impressive in ceiling design of the terminal. And, you catch well the various situation of passengers.
Subhogen (4065) 2014-01-28 2:31
Nice view of the tunnel. Like the perspective presented by the line. The semi-circular roof has been well presented. The bystanders add human elements to the scene and provide scale as well. The POV and the angle beautifully presents the length of the tunnel. Well managed light and excellent clarity. Thanks for sharing.

The length of the street is giving depth to the composition. The presence of the poepl is adding life to the scene. The point of view is showing the détails and the colours of the architecture of the bus terminal. Have a nice day.

What a way to show that photography subjects are all around us! Whenever I see a scene like this, I always marvel at how many people will pass this place every day and not see the graphic shapes and amazing depth afforded by this wonderful construction. You have an excellent work here in capturing that for display like this.
Thanks as always

Beautiful perspective and graphism. I like the yellow line and curves of the track that guide the eyes further into the image. The shadows create a very particular, sombre mood. Well done.

Bonjour, cher ami Danos,
Voilà un édifice bénéficiant d'une architecture bien particulière avec cette immense voûte en berceau. J'aime beaucoup le cadrage offrant une perspective de tout premier ordre et l'intérêt de la note d'accompagnement.
Très bonne restitution générale.

A beautiful perpective and composition,
Nice POV. of the tunnel station and great details,
Beautiful contrast and light with a sharp presentation,
all my compliments,

Nice perspective. Converging lines give great depth to the image :)
Waylim (25020) 2014-01-31 9:46
A good interior photo, not easy unless using a tripod. A good quality shot with nice details, espeically on the round ceiling of the cover. The shinny surface makes it looks like it just rain, which is typical in Seatle, except this year, there has not been much rain.
nikkitta (13192) 2014-01-31 10:02
Like train station and subways lot of mouvement and interesting scenes, here a great, interesting capture where you managed to show rail and roof (good one) with great perspective
Like the lights of the going train
Well done, congrats
Kamilutka (8095) 2014-02-01 2:09
very nice composition with lovely depth in here. The tunnel and its roof helps to increase the impression. I like the every day character of the scene and people included in the image who are busy with their own activities.
Thanks for sharing and have a nice day
mcmtanyel (10392) 2014-02-01 8:52
This is a very eye-catching photo with the leading lines on the ground and the ceiling and very pleasant repeating patterns. Great light management, congratulations & TFS.
mkamionka (29169) 2014-02-01 12:02
very interesting presentation from Seattle. Photos from USA rarely present the aspect of public transportation. Here you have well used the station with all its interesting geometry. Low light introduced a nice atmosphere.
Very well done!

Geia sou Danos
I have the strong impression of a voyage in the time machine for a visit to a futuristic underground city of the years 2024!
Excellent depiction despite low light and formidable perspective focusing attention to the grey taupes entering and leaving their tunnels!
geoant68 (2751) 2014-02-02 9:42
Royaldevon (26429) 2014-02-05 11:43
This is a very interesting shot.
The tunnel looks like something from the underground.
I like your viewpoint which anchors the f/g with the bus sign, moves on to a waiting passenger as a focal image and, then, insists that our eyes sweep over the roof, as we take in this wonderful arched ceiling. Its repeating lines, narrowing into the distance, create a wonderful sense of perspective.
The trams make interesting second focal image, convincing us that this is not the underground train station.
My warm regards,
mjw364 (6998) 2014-02-06 12:29
My kind of shot that makes great use of line, shape and linear perspective!

Robert1969 (6858) 2014-03-11 0:53
The picture tells more than a thousand words. The
diagonal lines in the picture creates a nice depth
and makes also the picture extra exciting. Light
mangement and composition are very good.
UlfE (14639) 2014-03-14 22:57
Very well spotted and an excellent daily life scene. I really like the mood. And you make perfect use of the lines in your composition It adds dynamics to the scene. Even if it is a still image you have the feeling that the buses are moving. The inclusion of people are great. TFS and have a nice weekend!
