Photographer's Note

Now more than 100 years old, Airlie Gardens in Wilmington, North Carolina, is a lush, flowing, naturalistic Southern-style garden ~ 67 acres of thousands of azaleas, camellias, magnolias, wisteria, wildlife, walking trails, freshwater lakes and, at the heart of it all, the grand 467-year-old Airlie Oak.

This detail shot is from the Bottle Chapel, located within the gardens. Crafted by seven area artists and one gardener as a temple to the memory of visionary artist (and Airlie gatekeeper) Minnie Evans, it was created using 5,000 recycled bottles, chicken wire and cement, and embellished with handmade works of copper, clay and glass tile.

Happy New Year's Eve everyone ~ and take care not to create too many empty bottles tonight! ;)
