Yellowstone National Park is well known for its large population of Bison that roam the grasslands. In winter the grass is covered by many feet of snow and conditions are extremely harsh. They use their large heads as snow ploughs to find food. They are also found near the thermal areas in winter.
Bison have been present in Yellowstone since prehistoric times. They are the largest mammals in North America and can be aggressive if approached. They weigh up to 1,800 pounds but are agile and can run fast.
This picture was taken close to the Madison River which runs freely in winter because it is fed with warm water from thermal activity.

An amazing view of those beasts in the snow, with excellent light and sharp details. I like his sticking out his tongue!

Excellent photographic moment. Good shot. Good work to capture this image. Very good colour, contrast and definition.

Just the knowledge that this is a shot from the wild, not a zoo, makes this photo exciting. What if the bison had felt threatened and decided to protect itself? Little solace that it's not carnivorous. At least you got close enogh to take this "portrait" with perfect sharpness, eye-contact and a good view of its very long tongue.

An interetsing note and a wonderful photograph which shows just how hard it must be for these magnificent beasts to forage for food in deep show and survive a winter of very low temperatures.
The strong light from the side has certainly brought out all the textures in the coat of this bison and the snow clinging to it as well as the rough snowfield around about it and its companion. Lovely strong colour and contrasts, perfect exposure and excellent details and sharpness.
P.S. How many more of these wonderful Yellowstone pictures do you still have hidden away in your archives? Let's see some more!

This wild nature shot of such a rare beautiful animal is really priceless! I like the tight framing and good focus on the bison's face - he seems to be quite interested and curious about who's photographing him. A funny moment you've captured - when he is sticking his long tongue out to the side. It looks really cold, but the brave bison seems to be unfazed by the snow and frost.

Great wildlife shot, Ann - the bison is one of the great symbols of the American West, and its comeback in recent decades is a great story, especially considering how close it came to extinction during my country's rather relentless push westward. The light on the snow-matted fur here is great, as is the DOF blurring the snow and bison in the BG. Is that an incredibly long tooth, a tongue, or is the FG bison eating another one's horn???

Again you show us your skill. The colors and light management are superb! When I published a travel magazine for Yellowstone I would have gladly wanted to display such a fine capture. Well done Ann!

What a fine shot.
The bison is facing the camera to give fine facial features, even down to a rude tongue!
Lovely textural details reveal that thick, winter coat and the depth of the snow.
There have been some interesting documentaries about wolf packs in Canada. It is amazing to believe that they can pull down such huge beasts as this!
Have a great w/e,

J'aime beaucoup cette composition. Ce bison doit avoir bien hâte que la neige fonde ou que les gardiens du parc apportent du foin pour le diner.J'aime beaucoup cette neige sur son poil ainsi que cette langue qui te fait la grimace.

An interesting note and a very good photo. Funny to see how the tongue sticks out, like an extra horn. How close were you here?

Hi Ann, Fantastic close encounter with wild bison. Such views (in reality) make an impression. I hope to see soon today the wild and hungry crocodiles. Best regards from Darwin Malgo

CLODO (28622) 2013-04-16 8:19
Good live encounter, I suppose he is going to lick you!
delpeoples (52301) 2013-04-17 1:22
Hi dear Ann
Oh this poor cutie! Lucky he has a nice woolly coat to keep him warm. The image of him almost completely submerged in snow is just fascinating, especially when (as in my own case) I;ve seen snow about twice in my life. Beautiful crisp colours and amazing definition. I can account for every flake of snow and every detsail of his woolly coat.
Thanks for sharing, have a great day

I guess winter must be a little hard for them also and I hope you kept the distance because he was really looking at you! It's a very good shot, with good focus. They look amazing covered with the white snow and the light was very good also.

I don't know the technical terms to express it, so I'll say it my way: I like the direction of the light and the way the shadows appear. According to the EXIF data, flash did not fire, congratulations on your light management skills.
fabbs99 (15675) 2013-05-21 12:44
Simply amazing. The bison looks awesome with his body covered in snow.Great piece of work.TFS.
mkamionka (29155) 2013-06-12 14:44
beautiful wild life photo. The snow makes a really nice decoration here also well spread over the animal provides some chance for a contrast. Great light in spite of the winter. The snow itself is so well exposed without any burnout here. That must have been a great trip!
marina7 (8049) 2013-07-15 11:37
Beautiful capture in all respects. You seem to be pretty close to him and he's looking straight at you, must have been dangerous unless you were in a hiding or using a telephoto lens. His tongue sticking out and curved upward makes him look like an unknown species having one tusk:))
Excellent light management, lovely work.
Miguel82 (19405) 2013-08-02 4:22
Great shot Ann, congratulations
A rare animal, here that female bison is defending her baby sitting in the snow in the bg
