Photographer's Note

Cape Lookout is the southern most of the Fabulous Four; Corolla, Bodie Island, Cape Hatteras being the other three. It is located on Core Bank, which is accessible by boat only. There are water taxies from the mainland, but you cannot drive to the lighthouse as with the other three, consequently it is the least visited . The first light was built in 1812 while the current structure was lit in November of 1869. It is 163 ft (50 m) at its first order Fresnel lens. The light is visible for 12- 19 miles (19-30 km). It is the only lighthouse in the US with the white/black diamond pattern. The points of the black diamonds are a north-south marker while the white points are east-west. When we were there in Oct of 1995, the brick structure was being repainted. You can see the men on the suspended scaffolding on the upper right part of the tower.
