Photographer’s Note
This is a rather unconventional view of the Mackinac Bridge--from underneath! This is the first photo I ever took with a large format camera (4x6). The exposure was rather difficult because it was so bright and grey outside and under the bridge it was very dark. It took some dodging and burning in the darkroom and some additional adjustments in Photoshop to get it just right. Some say the view from underneath is truly better than what you can see on film--for one, looking for five miles down a series of columns is an impressive sight, combined with the immense sound of traffic above you (and the occaisional BOOM! of a semi-truck bouncing around), but looking at the photo reminds me of the experience. On the left side of the bridge you can see Lake Michigan and on the right side is Lake Huron--the bridge acts as essentially a dividing line between each side of the Straits of Mackinac (like the bridge, it is pronounced MACK-in-naw. The city is named "Mackinaw" to avoid confusion, among other reasons).

A long perspective through the frame type piers. I also like the heavy feeling you conveyed with the low perspective of the superstructure. Somehow it gives a feeling of a 3D-CAD rendering.

There is a great sense of scale and depth created by the perspective. With the lighting and post-processing there is a model like quality, yet the detail is real. This has a surreal impact. Well done.
