The photograph shows a sloop off the coast of the Island of Nantucket on the picture perfect evening of 15 July. (A sloop is a fore-and-aft rigged boat with one mast and a single jib). The vantage point for the shot is the deck of the 11 m (35 ft) sloop, the Endeavor, on which I was sailing.
“Nantucket,” derived from a Native American expression "land far out to sea" is 50 km (30 miles) east of the Mainland of the United States, and takes two hours by ferry to reach from Hyannis Port, Massachusetts. The island is 5.6 km (3.5 miles) north to south and 23 km (14 miles) east to west. The population of Nantucket Island is approximately 12,000 year-round (comparable to its population in its heyday in the mid-19th century), but swells to 55,000-70,000 during the summer season. When it was first discovered and charted in 1602 by Captain Bartholomew Gosnold, it was populated with approximately 1,500 Native Americans of the Wampanoag Tribe. However, it was not settled until 1659. For the record the first British settlement that took roots came in 1607 when three tiny ships transported a vagabond group of settlers to Jamestown, Virginia.
During the first half of the 19th century Nantucket gained prominence as the whaling capital of the world. As many as 88 Nantucket whaling ships, sailed out of the island for 3-5 year periods at a time, and the oil they brought back provided not only the fuel for lanterns and candles, but also lubricated the machinery of the world. The discovery of petroleum, and the development of the electrical industry ended the demand for whale oil, and saw the end of the prosperous whale industry. However, in the 20th century the island gained prosperity again as a touristic mecca. In a throwback to its historical past, cars were not permitted on Nantucket until 1918.
One of the most famous of all American novels, Moby-Dick by author Herman Melville, was inspired by the true and tragic tale of the Essex. The Nantucket whale ship was hunting off the coast of South America in 1820 when it was rammed, and destroyed by an enormous sperm whale.

Marvellous composition and use of the spar and rigging to frame the beautifully sunlit yacht. Great balance in your squarish crop, although I would probably have been unable to resist cloning out or cropping the fence-post on the bottom. Your note is very interesting, as usual.
eldancer1 (36343) 2011-07-16 18:46
Beautiful composition, great use of natural from the side and awesome framing using the boat. Wonderful colors. Well done, tfs.

An excelent take on the sail-boat in distance, just "under" the ropes of the one you had sailed, Bulent.
Low light condition a bit darkened(maybe a use of CP??) - but the compo. is outstanding.
Have a nice Sunday,
timecapturer (49288) 2011-07-17 4:27

J'aime beaucoup cette composition. Les gréments du bateau offrent un cadre parfait pour le voilier qui vient vers nous.La lumière de fin de journée est superbe.
annjackman (21895) 2011-07-17 6:03
The composition is first class with the sloop framed by part of the sloop that you were sailing on. The colours and light are restful to the eye and you have made a very sympathetic frame. I enjoy this picture very much. An interesting note.
Best wishes, Ann

j'aime beaucoup les jeux de lumière ici, un ciel magnifique et des contrastes agréables, l'avant plan avec ces cordages et ces boiseries me plaisent énormément.
La profondeur donne un sentiment de liberté.
nobuikehonda (3848) 2011-07-19 4:12
Hello Professor Atalay,
Do you sail alone? You are actually on a boat. The framing is very dynamic. I feel the sailing season is arriving. I always think that these boats are very elegantly designed. But it is a result of what the nature is all about isn't that right? More we discover the secret of the nature, in this case, faster we can sail the boats. They probably become even more elegant also in its appearance. I have never been on the small boat in my life. I wonder what is like to travel with the wind. I can feel and smell the ocean breeze. It must be amazing.
Very vest regards, professor

I like sails shots and I like this one especially for the end of day light but also for the well balanced square composition, using elements of your boat to build a frame inside frame effect.
Graal (102752) 2011-07-19 23:49
nice glance on the sailboat. I like the composition. An interesting history and informations in note. Photo well done.
Have a nice day.

Thank you very much for your interesting text.
Technical a very well image, we see different details of the mast in foreground.
Also the sailboat middle of the picture is the real eye catcher, not big with two sails but attractive.
Excellent perspective and depth picture.
Pleasant color, nice place for sailers.
Very well done, TFS.
wolf38 (31296) 2011-07-20 4:53
Hello Bulent. What a fantastic composition. You show, what chance has a photographer, to give the image dynamics. Even the poignant light on the sail like it very much. Overall, a great shot. Rgds, Wolfgang.
josepmarin (58357) 2011-07-20 5:53
an excellent composition in which you have caught the elegance of the sloop since another boat, with its nautical elements in foreground.
I like the soft luminosity of the photo, and the silver tonalities that flood the image, keeping a good level in the colors of the whole elements.
The scene is very dynamic and attractive.
A beautiful work.
danos (97479) 2011-07-20 7:00
nice the snapshot with the sloop to be found in the center of your camera as you sailing the nearby sloop.I like the vantage point for your shooting as the creating 'frame' from the mast and the ropes of your own.Excellent the quality and the light management of the scene.
rodgerg (55767) 2011-07-20 7:12
A square format very well selectd for this excellent composition. Creative and efficience framing with the very graphic FG. The superb boat, very well located, arise well and give a beautiful contrast. Great depht with the another boats in the BG.

ottimamente catturata questa scena con la barca a vela vista dall'altra barca a vela.

Merhaba, Bulent Bey,
Splendid composition, the inclusion of the mast and lines are very decorative for the picture. Beautiful light and wonderful natural colours.Tebrikler.
Longroute (19396) 2011-07-21 1:13
Being a sailor and having a sailing boat (9,80 m only) I appreciate a lot this composition of yours, more so because I know how difficult is to create a meaningful composition on board of a small boat. The choice of POV is very limited and the sea often doesn't offer a good focal point. Often the coast is too far away or too flat anyway to be a proper subject. Here you have exploited well the boom and the sheets of the boat you were in, and the other boat, not too far away, is a very interesting (at least for me) focal point. Furthermore the light is ideal here, warm and coming from sideways and the clouds in the sky make the picture richer. To conclude: a photo I'd like to take myself if I wasn't all the time too busy with the wheel to take out my camera!
By the way from what I see here the Endeavor had to be an "old lady" as we call the vintage boats, and I really envy you for that because I'm very fond of that wooden boats.
asajernigan (21427) 2011-07-21 8:48
This is a fine shot of this sloop. The boats rigging frames the sloop perfectly. The lighting and colors are great and the photo has nice sharpness.

Très belle composition avec au premier plan le bateau suggéré par quelques éléments. !

I wish you good trip to Barcelona and you can meet with the our TE-members too.

Ciao dear Bulent,
wonderful image, surely some Commender would be happy to have this photo in own cabin. Excellent choice of POV, which includes the detail of the jib and its actions. Fantastic light that illuminates the sail and the highest clouds in the sky. Reading your interesting notes I thought that petroleum has saved many whales, interrupting their hunt. Truly a curious consideration! :-)
Ciao, have a nice Sunday!
delpeoples (57666) 2011-07-23 18:08
Merhaba dear Bulent
The quality of this photo is exceptional. The light and especially the composition are what make it so good. I love how you've given us a context, they ship's steering wheel and rigging appearing around the frame are artfully placed. Wonderful colours and a wonderful atmosphere.
Thanks for sharing and I wish you a lovely weekend

I knew i like this one from the first moment i viewed it.
it must be the slight glare on the sails, and the same brightness on the clouds at the top left.
alot of elegance in that region of the photo :)
have yourself a memorable day

I really like the framing of this photo. The original and creative POV allows us a full view of one sloop, while also seeing details of the one you were on. The water and sky are so serene, and I can imagine a cool breeze - which would be lovely right now!!
Sorry I didn't critique this sooner. My brother got married this past weekend, and there were a lot of events and preparations leading up to the big day. It all turned out beautifully - except for the heat!! :-)
MJR (3360) 2011-07-27 14:29
A lovely dreamy blend of blues and greys. A clever image of the sloop very neatly framed by the rigging of your own craft. All very tasteful, I'm sure !
My own, sole, experience of sailing in the US was off Manchester by the Sea, not so far from this image. I dont remember the weather being quite so kind !
papagolf21 (100962) 2011-07-28 14:26
Bonsoir, cher ami Bulent,
Nous avons vraiment l'impression d'être à bord et de profiter de la beauté de ce paysage marin.

Hello dear Professor,
The photo conveys the mood of summer holiday flavor and emphasizes the beauty of the sea voyage.
POV is very original! The details of the first boat that we see, serve almost as a bridge between two seals.
Very well done!
Your program to come to Italy is still valid?
I wish you a nice Sunday and I hope to hear from you soon!
bayno (18344) 2011-08-01 3:28
I see that you have a passion for boats! beautiful composition with a piece of mainsail in the foreground and the beautiful boat in the background, excellent light and depth of field, very interesting note,
gunbud (34066) 2011-08-08 6:31
The lovely old wooden mast and all its ropes make an excellent lead-in to the white sails that stand out so well against the soft island sky.
Wonderful depth and beautiful subtle colors to this nautical treasure.
I also found your historical note very compelling.
emilbo (22616) 2011-08-22 8:38
Magnifique prise de vue et beau format carré. Le voilier est superbe avec la lumière qui frappe la voile. Excellente composition qui fait que le voilier est bien encadré par le mat et les câbles. Beau travail.
Toutes mes félicitations et bonne semaine,
Ricx (13495) 2011-08-22 23:38
Hi Bulent, a wonderful capture off the stern of the boat, with partial view of the boom and sail.. The angle of the sun off the sails is lovely-- enhanced by the dark tone of the image,, superb and creatively framed. well done.. I trust that you are having a wonderful holiday- - your trip through England sounds a bit rushed - and yes just as well we did not plan a meeting yet.. I am sure we will meet soon.. Our next meeting is with Rosemay from Namibia (SnapJR) who is vising her son in England in September. Enjoy your week Rich
Urs (14082) 2011-08-24 2:35
A very dramatic shot boosted by the FG which you cleverly integrated into your POV. Fine sharpness and colour hues. I like you photograph a lot, because it is extraordinary.
Due to a very heavy workload I was a away from TE for months. Now I hope that I can spend again more time in TE
