VIEW OF EUROPE
The photograph shows the rising sun in the direction of Lisbon, Portugal, 6030 km (3745 miles) from a beach at Corolla on the Outer Banks of North Carolina, USA. Lisbon and Corolla are almost at the same latitude (36.17° N for Corolla and 38.44° N for Lisbon). I was strolling along the beach at the ungodly hour of 5:22 am when I came across a fisherman who had set out several fishing rods. In Lisbon the time would have been 11:22 am.
I would like to dedicate this shot to my Portuguese friends, José Pires, Gonçalo Lopez and Ana Dores.

A beautiful sunrise to behold on a grey day. I like the use of the vertical frame and the way the sunlight plays over the incoming waves. The fishing rod makes an interesting silhouette seemingly pointing back at the sun. The image has a lovely range of graduated tones.

danos (85143) 2010-10-31 7:49
nice the sunrise with the colour tints of the sky to be superb. The fishing pole is nice decorative element of the scene with the reflections to complete the whole image.I wonder if the fishing pole representative the long distance of the 3745 miles from this beach until the outer banks of North Carolina.Well done.

Veramente bello questo mare al tramonto! Bella la composizione con la canna da pesca piantata sulla spiaggia, e giusta la scelta del taglio in verticale!
Ottimo lavoro! Saluti, Nino.

I like to think I am learning about photographers as well as photographs, Bulent. This is the second time, in adjacent correspondences that you have mentioned being up at 'ungodly hours'. Is this the time when you gain your inspiration, your most unusual shots, or is it related to your world travelling and its associated jetlag?
Whatever, it is a thoughtful shot, with symbolism of connections to Europe, very well composed in its 'thirds' and off-centre focal image.
The colour tones are lovely.
My warm regards,
abmdsudi (41936) 2010-11-01 7:46
This simple sunrise image has few attractive elements worth mentioning, first i like the different layers of the waves with diff tones and secondly the soft pinksh-orange of the sky and lastly the golden reflection with lovely textures. That lone fishing rod adds interest to the image. Excellent clarity and sharpness, and abv all the textures, shade and shadows are wonderful. A high quality image, TFS

This is a gorgeous sunrise with lovely warm colors and the suns light reflecting across the water. The vertical format was an excellent choice and the inclusion of the fishing rod adds interest to the composition. I like it very much!

A fishing of the bass perhaps In all the cases a superb photograph on this sunrise. At this hour of the day it must be very pleasant to walk along the beach. Resting glance and beautiful thought to our friends of Portugal, thank you Bülent.

Great exposure on this one Bulent, it is so difficult to control the burn and you have done a fabulous job. The layers of reflection on the waves is awesome.
Urs (14082) 2010-11-02 7:07
Beautiful sunrise - you are sure it was sunrise not not sunset - with a red sun ball. Brilliant reflection in the sea.A very good photo job.
Thanks for your critique of my movie billboard shot from Hat Yai. Actually it is a Silvester Stalone movie but do not ask me which one, I'm not good in action movies.

Hi Bulent, Like a vision from a happy dream. Portugal seems to have excellent beaches and good surf also from the photos seen on this site. I like the balance 1/3 sky and 2/3 water and the colours plus the theme of relaxing while waiting for dinner to arrive! TFS. Murray.
shevchenko (19257) 2010-11-02 21:26
The fishing rod is standing too straight on the beach, hope it is a lucky day to obtain a big fish. Strong tides on the morning, good vertical frame, thanks for sharing the impressive seascape.

Tolga

Fantastic vertical composition with the tall surf casting fishing pole making the ideal lead-in to the rich varying golden tones rolling in on the powerful surf.
Very tasteful frame and a thoughtful dedication.

Hello dear Bulent, what a wistful, nostalgic photo with a beautiful dedication to our Portugese friends. I'm so pleased you met with them and can only imagine the fun you had. The photo here is perfectly exposed, the beautiful morning tones are so soft and whimsical. I congratulate you on waking up early for this shot, I'm not a morning person, so when I see others doing it for us, I am filled with respect :) TFS and I wish you a beautiful evening, Lisa

Dear Bulent, anyway you feel the nostalgi for Europe. And you say it in poems and toils like this one from North Carolina. Great is this artistic expression. All compliments and friendship!

Ciao dear friend,
a pleasant homage to our old Europe and to the Portuguese friends. You have captured a splendid sunrise, managing well the light of the sun and getting suggestive colors and reflexes. Excellent composition, dear Bulent, with the fishing rod that ideally points out the direction. BRAVO!
Ciao, have a beautiful day!

strong contrasting elements
the photo is dominated by horizontals, but the vertical placement of the fishing rod moves the eyes in a complete different direction.

Dear Professor 'A'
Very nice, though a simple shot...the sunrise & the fishing rod in waiting! A shot of hope!
Like the reflection of the sun on the waves

Very beautiful sunset, good composition that he is taken at the good time and the moment.

Well definitely, long distance!
Nice view, :)
Greetings from the other side of the ocean!
We have a winter now, with snowstorm, traffic hell due to it and other nice things.
Nice to see this peaceful landscape now.

This surely is a highly aesthetic and high-quality picture, narrated very cleverly and interestingly in the note. The scene has excellent light, wonderful colors and great foreground. Perfectly well done!
windosil (1158) 2010-11-28 3:40
A fabulous re-creation of that line of light linking the people of the world. Fascinating too to read the very varied comments!
This has been a wonderful year for spectacular sunsets and sunrises here, thanks probably to the ash from the Icelandic volcano. Several of my much inferior non-philosophical photos are posted on Facebook, which sadly you seem to have deserted.
Warm wishes from the not-too-far north,
Docarmo (9639) 2010-11-28 19:07
The depth you achieved here is probably reaching Lisbon!
Very beautiful colours, an excellent light management!
Portugal is a country I want to visit - part of my ancestors were Portuguese.
I feel touched by your dedication because of this.
subhendu_bagchi (25503) 2010-12-05 1:18
the colours of this image is magical and romantic. Like the composition keeping the fishing rod at foreground which added depth to it. Nice to see the sleeping lights on water. Exposer is perfect to show the atmosphere. Very well done. Tfs.

This is, indeed, a lovely shot. However, there are so many wonderful photos in your collection that I don't know where to start. Clearly, you have a wonderful eye and talent and you love what you are doing. Thank you so much for your kind comments and your assistance with the "size" of my photos. This site is, indeed, new to me and there is a bit of a learning curve...I'll get there. Again, wonderful, wonderful work...please keep sharing. Jerry Hogan

I'm really sorry, as I sometimes spend days without visiting TE, I almost missed this one:(!
Thanks a lot for the photo and for remembering us here!
The lonely fishing rod is great. A good moment to take it, colours are very good and I like the reflection of the sunlight on the water!
Thanks a lot:)!
kato (11630) 2011-05-13 22:09
You're capturing well this seascapes by a good composition and good sunset time, so it's impressive to see the reflection projected to the sea and the sky dyed to evening sun. And, a fishing rod draws out a good effect for the whole in this scene, I think.
And, it's interesting in this title, too.
nobuikehonda (3848) 2011-06-27 1:15
Hello Professor Atalay,
Your eyes look far beyond the horizon. Like the photo that you have presented to us recently "Lisbon 6030 km" The sunrise is wonderful to see. Unlike the other photo, there is no fisherman in the frame, his presence is only suggested by the fishing pole. I personally prefer this image. Serenity of the morning is there in front of us. The ocean waves could be heard. One could almost walk on the reflections of the sun, to the horizon and beyond. I appreciate the image very much. It is a very emotional moment that you captured. TFS
