Photographer’s Note

This photo was taken on the same day as my other Mt. Rainier photos. I loved this view because despite how difficult Mt. Rainier is to climb, this view makes it look like you could just "walk" right on up it easily. Mt. Rainier is the tallest peak in the Pacific Northwest. Mount Rainier has the largest collection of glaciers on any single peak anywhere in the contiguous United States. This glacier is called the Paradise-Stevens Glacier. Nearly a century ago, this glacier was one of the main attractions in the Mt. Rainier National Park. It was riddled with accessible ice caves, and crevasses that were within easy walking distance of major roads. My husband and I hiked up to one of these ice caves in 1991 when I was 7 months pregnant, I had a woman all upset with me for being up on a mountain in my condition, as I looked like I was due any second. Once I explained that I was "Only" 7 months and was used to hiking she seemed okay with it. I think she thought I was having twins or something!
At the time this photo was taken there was no longer any ice caves to visit at the lower levels we had hiked to before. Apparently the ice has been receding gradually every year. It was still beautiful.
For this photo, I cropped from the original, added contrast and lightened up the midtones. I also sharpened the photo, I hope not too much!
