you've understood the light very well here.. so i'll give you credit for that..
but you should use a more interesting scene or a subject perhaps a portrait.. but not a close up portrait..
but a portrait in a specific environment.. with similar use of light..
for example.. even here if you had someone sitting here.. or beter than that someone's reflection in the mirror. would have got you a very nice portrait..
remember that portraits are not necessarily photogrpahs of people taken with the camera right at their faces..
this sort of a play between light and the dark is known as CHIAROSCURO . it is an ancient art and i think originated during the renaissance period.. rembrandt too used it in his paintings..
anyway i hope my ideas help you
take care :)

The window, the light and the mirror make me remember my sister drawing lessons (drawing fruits, vases and the shadows)... :-) But there's no subject in the shot, a central point, in the case of my sister classes, the 'fruit' or the 'vase' is missing. As Sohrab sugested, could be a person...
Anyway, its a nice one! Parabens!

Sohrab is on to it. Except one thing, it's the North window that you want to use, as the light will not be harsh like this one coming in from the south on someones face.
The overall image is well done. Portrait or not. This is an image of architecture using objects in place.
The only thing I would do here, is crop out the house from that window. From left to right until that window is out. You'll lose the basket, however the quality of the image will improve.
Excelent work and eye to see something out of the ordinary.
Well done

Beautiful photo.
A perfect game between light and dark.
My preferred one.

Hi Scarrlette, thank you for taking the time to comment on my picture. I like this photo a lot, it's got that authentic, 'old' feeling. Nice use of light, with great dark-light contrasts. Nice brownish yellowish colours.

Hi, Skarlette--
This is very nice. It does remind me of the way light is used in some of the Dutch master paintings, like some of Vermeer's work. I do agree that the human element, reflected in the mirror, or perhaps leaning on the sink (something like that), would have added to the composition. Well done.
