Photographer’s Note

I'm practicing various camera settings for my upcoming trip to the Grand Canyon. Crockett Park near my home in Warrenton, Va gave me an opportunity to try my hand at sunsets and time exposures. The gentlemen in the boat were a little bonus to the picture.

I like the colors and the framing of the photo, as well as the subjects in the photo. I might have cropped out the pier or included more of it. There seems to be some digital noise in the trees at the horizon. That was probable from downsizing the file to make it fit the site.

Nice composition.Very colorful.
However the noise level is bit high.
Are you using high ISO?
Reducing the noise would make this a perfect picture.

Hello Eileen,

This is really a nice good sunset, with the trees at the sides that frame the scene and the splendid reflections in the water. As you said the canoe is a bonus and a lovely focal point.
I think I can express myself freely with you in the hope that I could help you to improve your technique. There are no exif data in this page so I cannot know which camera you have, but I guess it's a compact camera like mine. I deduce it from the sky which has some noise - the same as my camera! All compact cameras have more o less this fault. You can easily eliminate it with a good program or plugin of PS like Neat Image. Another minor defect is the halo around the tree leaves, clearly visible especially at the right and at the left. This I guess again, might be due to the use of highlights/shadows tool in PS or another similar program. It's better to darken the highlights using the Levels tool which doesn't produce halos.
