Photographer's Note

Mooney Falls is about 1 mile past Havasu Falls, just past the campground and 3 miles from the Supai Village. This superb waterfall is one of the most spectacular I have ever seen (with Havasu Falls of course). It is a towering waterfall of about 200 ft. in height. Once engaged in such beauty I really felt like I was part of one of those Action Adventure movies and that I have just found the fountain of youth. :) One of the more fun and scary part of visiting the Mooney falls is getting to the bottom. First I encountered a warning sign that said "Continue at your own risk" then, I literally had to squeeze myself into 2 narrow tunnels that were located into the cliff itself. (The true origin of these tunnels is still unknown) After the second small tunnell, I started asking myself if I should go down or not? Needless to say that us photographers think we are superheroes and nothing bad will ever happen to us so I decided to go back to the top to grab my gear and head back down. That's when it got tricky. First it is really steep, second the mist of the waterfall is all over the cliff so it makes it slippery. To make it down, they have anchored many chains and metal spikes into the rocks to help your decent. I even encountered a chain that was loose so I wisely chose another one. At the end I had to go down a small wooden ladder. Finally, I was touching the ground but more happy to be there than safe. Going back up was much easier. People who are really afraid of heights , I think should restrain themselves from going there. But don't let me scare you, It looks worst than it is, I have seen an 8 years old girl at the bottom, even saw someone trying to make it with their dog..that scared me. My girlfriend told me that the dog was shaking half way thru so they had to climb back up....Wise choice

This waterfall was named after some guy named Mooney who died here trying to descend this cliff to the bottom of the waterfall.
